I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find a solution for my problem. I have a gsx-r 750 rear wheel in my project kz650, it has a 45 tooth sprocket on it. My question is where can I get a 40 tooth rear sprocket to fit that wheel?. I know that my 650 sr came with a 16" rear wheel and the gsx-r is 17" but they have about the same overall rolling diameter, and I think the 45 tooth sprocket would be too much, so I need a custom sprocket, unless there is another solution out there that I am missing. I plan on keeping the 530 chain set up it has now, but I will have to get a 1/2" offset front sprocket also, does anyone have any ideas?.

what tire are you running on the GSXR rear? I would look up the circumference and compare it to the SR tire circumference, if they are very close I wouldn't stray too far from the stock final drive ratio. Also I would go as big on the front sprocket as you can before going smaller in the rear as well.

Has anyone on here had any dealings with sidewinder sprockets, and if so where they good or bad? also they sell titanium lifetime warranted sprockets, they are not supposed to wear out, but they are kinda pricey. They do claim to be able to make custom sprockets at a reasonable price.

Leon, would you be willing to make me up a 1/2" offset sprocket? as all I can seem to find is either 3/8" or 5/8". I would provide the sprockets.

Would suggest contacting Leon about this privately outside the forum. :cheer:

Ok, it's been a very productive week. I got the sprocket problem figured out, I started bracing the frame and got a good start on the seat. I'm starting to think it's possible that I may be able to ride it this summer. Here are some pics of the progress so far..............

Based on the 22mm carbs it appears that your bike is a D2A. Do you plan do install 24mm carbs that came on the D2 and most other KZ650 models? Ed

I guess I didn't know that the carbs where smaller than other models, why would kawasaki put 22mm carbs on that model, and are there any other major differences? If nothing else changes how much of a difference would 24mm carbs make?

The models that came with the Mikuni VM22SS carbs were the 1978 KZ650-B2A and the 1978 KZ650-D1A. These were only marketed in the USA, and I suspect, but don't know for sure, that they were only sold in California to meet some weird regulation. The manual shows the B2A as having 60 hp and the D1A, with its criss-cross exhaust as having 58 hp. The other 1978 models (the KZ650-B2, C2, and D1) came with Mikuni VM24SS carbs and are shown in the manuals as having 64 hp. Other than the 22mm carbs I do not believe there are any differences between the engines on the B2A/D1A models and the regular 24mm carb models.

Both carb types have ribbed bodies and look very similar, but the VM22SS carbs are easy to identify because they have a large orifice at the 10:00 position that the VM24SS carbs do not have. See images below. Ed
