I was at Cerberus Motorcycles on Moto Monday and Dave Hargreaves offered to help me out with the m-unit/m-button routing and wiring (he owed me B)). He told me a lot that wasn't in the documentation and gave me some good ideas. I'm going to bring the frame to his shop and get everything wired up in a couple days. It's a motorcycle co-op so many people work on their bikes there.

I received all the rust remover and protectors so I'm going to start on that after the wiring. I'm also going to order the new headers so I can start mocking everything up. I'm looking forward to starting on the engine, that will be the fun part.

I also went and bought another motorcycle, a 1986 Yamaha srx600. It was sitting for a year but after many attempts I was able to kick start it. It's a completely stock and I got it for cheap ($1750 if anyone's curious). The guy put over $1200 into it just before it sat.

I was working on stripping down the OEM harness and I got to thinking about the gauges. They wobble around a bit, were not very accurate, and there is a crack on the front center. I checked on Ebay and every single gauge has this same crack so it must be a design flaw.



I disassembled them to see how easy it would be to fix or maybe build my own enclosure.







It looks in great shape inside but the more I mess with it the more I want to replace it. I did some research to find a gauge that would have everything I need. A Fuel gauge, Tachometer, and Speedometer.

Thje best value for the money is the Koso XR-SRN ($170),



On the high end I could get the Motogadget Motoscope Pro ($470) but it's 3x the price and is nearly 1/3rd the size and weight of the Koso.

The last one I'm looking at is the Acewell ACE-2853AB ($200).

Does anyone know of any others that I should consider? I'll be deciding and ordering one this week. So far I'm leaning towards the acewell. Motogadget has similar round gauges but none display the fuel level and they are twice the price.

they are all nice but the acewell fits the vintage vibe better.

I checked the Delkevic site and they now have more headers to choose from for the KZ1000-KZ1100.

They now have one specifically for the J motor that should fit.

This was the only place that I could find a manual tensioner for my WR250x when the automatic one was going bad and it worked great so I figured I'd use one on my KZ. They are cheaper than the competition at only $38.95 w/ free shipping and Mark Krieger is very knowledgable and quick to respond to questions.

Heres a European website that has a pretty wide selection for different budgets.Ive ordered bits off them a few times over the years and theyre reliable,though I cant speak to the quality of the clocks themselves. Have a look.

I been looking at the Acewell gauges and it seems that there are many different models that look very similar. They are from 52mm up to 85mm. Some have more customizations than others.

The smallest: MD52-253 : 52mm

I have had a couple of Acewell clocks on bikes in the past and they work well. Look nice in the black too.

I prefer an analog tachometer but a digital speedometer is fine. So out of those I would choose the last one.

Although they are not waterproof or advertised for motorcycles, I have been eyeballing these:



Speedhut combo gauge

Completely customizable, with a GPS speedometer so no wheel sensors or magnets needed.

They have all different kinds of combo and separate gauges, might be worth a look.

Not being waterproof I think it's more for cars, for that price I wouldn't want to risk it. It wouldn't always work if there are buildings, bridges, or tunnels blocking GPS. It's also lacking a fuel gauge among other things. I like the Acewell because they have everything I would need in one place at a good price.

I do like the last ACE-4554AB analog gauge. One cool feature specific to that gauge (and the MD85-556) is "Gear indicator which calculates gear by comparing speed and RPM." I'm not sure how well this works. I've read that it can display ambient air temperature because I don't want to run an engine oil temperature sensor.

I think I like the 52mm MD52-253 or the 64mm ACE-2856 most. The main difference seems to be size and number of lights. The smaller one would require a few less wires because the turn signals and hazards are all in one light. I really like the minimalist look and light weight of the all digital gauges.

Wow that's cool. I'd figure a way to use it if I was building a street mod rod bike.

I contacted Acewell and they sent me a picture of the gauge with a red backlight.



They also told me that this speed sensor may work, although I have no idea about the cable length.


ACE-S10 : M12 Fork cable drive adaptor

It looks the same as the one on the bike now


I'll have to take some measurements to be sure before I order it.

I got in the Delkevic headers and they look great. I mocked them up under the bike and they should come out just under the right foot peg without any issues. I'll know for sure once I mock up the engine so I can have a mounting bracket welded.
