Thanks guys for all the help so far,I've been trawling through some other topics on here and I'm amazed by the depth of knowledge and skills of the members! There are some truly awesome bikes on here!

I managed to squeak away for some shop time today, the head looks to be stock,no porting...I pulled the barrels off,the pistons are not scored and the bores look to be in good shape with cross hatching still evident!

The cam cover though has some scratching on the under side, looks like someone has taken a dremel tool to it? !!
There doesn't seem to be any aluminum in the motor which is a relief!

Is it normal to see a chain tensioner in this condition?

Looks like Wiesco Pistons.....can you measure the piston bore in MM....looking for 70mm for stock over than is a bore job....looks like a 1075 or more.

All the cam gear needs to be replaced....that looks great compaired to what I found. Its normal to find roached cam items.

The cam cover was clearenced for high lift cams....used to have a raised cross in the area ground.

the rubber parts r the 1st to go. all of those heat cycle harden the rubber then it starts to brake up. the cam rollers r some of the most expensive parts to replace. around $400. u can buy rollers with aluminium instead of rubber, from Liska. they will last longer but r noisier.

Ok, Im a convert!! I love this motor ! It looks to be over engineered and well laid out ,even has cool little details like the threaded lugs to split the cases! I love the direct drive off the crank to the clutch ,not like the hyvo chain on my 750 Honda.
My thinking is to measure and check everything is ok ,clean up the cases ,new oil seals and gasket set and put it back together .

I have some more questions

The crank isn't welded, in the current state of tune is it nessesary ?

Is it worth shelling out for heavy duty engine studs ?

Are seal kits readily available or is it order individually ?

Thanks ,

Mick

welded crank is not necessary, heavy duty studs would be a good investment right now.
seal kits should be available from z1e,partsnmore maybe others.

these engines are overbuilt and well layed out.
why do you think we are all so crazy about them  .

built right they will last forever.

Nice score with the engine dude, I also like what you are doing with the bike, I love the old Z1000s, I'm just converting mine from shaft to chain drive so I can fit a 200 tyre on the rear.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing it finished :)
