New Guy 1978 Z1R Project

Started messing with cleaning up the chassis a little this weekend. Will be easier to get thigns down when it is not riding weather, spent all day Sunday out on the CBR.

Looks like it'll need some brake work too. I think the front MC is non-oprational, and will need a rebuild. Found the link to the kit here, but is out of stock, will reasearch. I also need a new chain, so may as well do the conversion now.

Mainly just taking photos to see how it all goes back together

Yep, it was a complete and running bike, previous owner was a friend of mine. He got beat by a 600 Katana in 1993 and decided to take it apart to upgrade cams and port the head. It sat ever since...15K miles on the ODO. It was in a garage, but across the street from ocean fron in Hawaii, so the air alone got to it some.

I did not know a complete dash was hard to find, I'll be super gentle cleaning it

My plan from here is just clean up the frame and paint it, restore the gauges, replace the chrome parts. Get the hydraulics working, chain conversion, bead blast and reapint the rims, and new rubber. I have the CBR1000RR for going fast, this will be a cruiser

So something of a resto mod, eventually progressive rate springs and possible swing arm conversion to get more rubber under it.

sounds like a solid plan.

yes the dashes are very hard to find and expensive when you do find one.

Ya I just seen a shitbox 78 z1r on ebay go for 3600 us... I would only pay that for a mint z1100r at least you get some race goodies with that bike.

Yep, for whatever reason, they seem to have really accelerated in value lately. I recall running bikes in the $2500 range and nice ones $4k or so just a few years ago. Now I've seen the nice ones up to $9k, crazy really. My buddy really made me a deal on the bike when I got it, he knew the fairing alone was worth more than the asking price, but he knew I'd get it together and enjoy it. Good to see there are people like that and Eddie in the hobby....to many people are E-bay crazy.

Hey, thanks all! Have it all apart now, have been cleaning and prepping some. Just moved into a new place with lower rent and still have some garage space, plus a promotion will free some cash up to get this on the road by summer. REALLY want to hear that motor run

Well, life throws us curves - I have moved a few times since the last post, and the Z1R has just been sitting.

I am now living in Orlando, FL - we moved here in Feb. Of course COVID is a mess, but I am healthcare and still have a job. I decided to get serious and contacted premier classic motorcycles in Tampa to take over the build. This bike is just too nice to keep sitting in pieces, and I want to ride it! They picked it up last month and are in progress, they estimate 6 months. I'll update here as I get photos.

Can't wait to ride it!
