Love where this project is going...
Keep posting the images.

Question, since you had the motor out of the frame, was there a reason not to clean it up (wire wheel, buff, paint)?

Not really any of my business, your bike so feel free to tell me to go screw myself LOL!... Just curious...

OMR

So what are you saying, my engine looks like shit? :P

I'm pretty limited on resources. If I had my druthers, I'd have bought a blasting cabinet and glass beaded everything, then had it all powder coated. Then again, this bike isn't garage kept, either (I'm doing all this work in my wood shop, hence all that lumber in the background). The bike is going to develop a patina of weather and wear soon enough, and if I make it too pretty then I might be afraid to get it dirty or (gasp) scratch it!

No, I figure the motor's clean enough for now. The only polishing I did on it is inside the head...

Good luck getting all the glass beads out of the motor, you never will no matter how much you clean it after. Looks good, works bad.

Shoe Goo is industrial strength rubber cement, comes in handy for a lot of things. In this instance I used it to glue the rubber strips to the aluminum subframe, and to each other. These strips raise the seat height slightly and should help dampen vibrations. (I cut up a big rubber bungee strap...)

Good job man. I am glad to see I am not the only one willing to take a chance and think outside the box.I have to do what you did to the motor. I am thinking of using APE they are about an hour from my house. Good Luck

Oh, I think it's certainly possible, it's just a big PITA. If I were to do this, I'd have split the crank case and taped over all the bearing surfaces first. It's either that or leave the engine assembled and completely seal off all the holes so none of the media can get in, though that comes with it's own risks like what happens if one of the plugs fails and media does get in?

But if I was going to go to that much expense and trouble, I'd have sent the transmission off to have the gears undercut and heat treated and coated with tungsten disulphide and have all the bearings replaced with high tolerance ceramic bearings, also treated with tungsten disulphide.
And I would have gotten the Wiseco K810 kit.
And I would have sent the head off to Extrude Hone, then APE for new seats & guides & springs & stainless valves.
And I would have gotten a brand new seat, not some crashed out cast off from some racing team that needed a ton of fiberglass repair.
And a dent-free GPz tank instead of one I had to hang a quart of Bondo onto.
And Tomaselli adjustable clip-ons.
And real Napoleon bar end mirrors instead of these Emgos.
And an Acewell or Veypour gauge.
And a HID headlamp.
And the suspension and wheels from a ZRX.

Shit, now I'm depressed! This thing's gonna be a piece of shit!

What's that, plugging the pistons into the block, then attaching the con rods? I wish I could take credit for that, but I got the idea from somebody here on KZR (wish I could remember who). It works, but requires quite a lot of dexterity and patience!

Oh man, what a resource to have so close!
