A FINE job you've done...wow!B)

What a great feeling,hey!

Congrats to you,and that rebirth.

As far as the oil leaks...tear it down and go bigger,I say.B)
That WILL make a nice winter project.

I'm leaning the same way:)
How big can I go and not stress the 650 crank to the point of replacement?
I did a Dyna ignition system replacement on my 78 GL1000 and it made a huge difference in performance. So, that will be sone to this as well

Clutch is getting weak and starting to slip as well, so the engine won't be the only issue to address this winter.(perhaps a performance clutch is in order here B))

The more I think about it, a "Sleeper" would be fun to do on thisB)

You have to get in touch with the wing-man(Mark Wing).
He can help you with all your questions,as to displacement and crank stress.

I like the idea of the sleeper though. That's kinda what I've done with mine.It doesn't LOOK stupid fast, but it goes liked a raped ape, lol.

Thanks for the compliments:)
The paint has held up relatively well to the gas. However, it does not hold up well to brake fluid from a leaky M/C :(
I should be able to buff it out and apply a coat or two of clear to bring it back to what it was.

Before you decide on where you want to go, you need to find out where you are at.

You need to check the bore to see if it's still within specs and can be honed or if it is going to require an over bore.

If it has to be bored, then a bunch of options appear.

Stock .5mm oversize pistons and rings (if you can find them).

Wiseco 700cc kit

KZ750 cylinder block with KZ pistons.

KZ750 cylinder block with GPz750 pistons.

KZ750 cylinder block with Wiseco 810cc kit.

Roll your own 880cc kit, big bucks for approximately 70cc gain.

Thanks for the info steell...I like the idea of bumping this up with the 750 block and Wiseco 810 kit...and possible just getting the 700 Wiseco's would be a viable option as well.
I didn't get to the compression test today like I had hoped, but I should have results tomorrow. I'm guessing that judging by the color of the plugs, and the amount of oil missing combined with some smoke the last few times on warm-up, that compression is going to be down.

I started the tear-down yesterday...ran into a few snags that with the help of some of you, I was able to muddle my way this far...
..halfway thru head cleaning

..shot of the jugs

...looks like some moisture got in

...might as well tackle some polishing on this as well

I had considered doing a big bore kit on my 650, but found that for the money, I could get a set of 29mm smoothbores, used electronic ignition, and a GOOD tune up. I finnaly did a valve adjustment(the last one was probably about the time Reagan took office)and my 650 does very well. Even a set of 26mm carbs PROPPERLY jetted to a good pipe and a good ignition will surprise you. (and save you some cash) IF i had not done this, I would have just bolted in a 750 engine. As far as clutch slippage, take out the stock springs and replace them with a set of inner valve springs from a 900. The factory set the clutch to slip because it was cheaper to warrenty clutched than transmitions or other parts.

I am using a medium/soft wire dremel inside the chambers, and a non-agressive flap wheel on the surface...The flap wheel works really well on taking off the old residue, but if you go too agressive with the grit, it will round off the chamber edges, and dig into the head surface.
For the most part, keeping the wheel moving across the surface and not staying in one spot is the key to a good smooth finish.

Hey all,
It's been a few months since I've posted, and I finally got around to taking off the jugs to replace the gasket.
Well, when I pulled it off, there was some sand between the case and the jugs. I think you know where I'm going with this... :(
So, now I have some sand that is in the lower, and I am wondering what to do about it...I dread to think about this, but do I have to open everything up?
