z650 c4

Ok,

After a year of riding and filling me pants with engine oil i wanted to get the seals fixed of the engine. And while im at it look at the brakes because the bike doesn't roll very smoothly. This is not going to be a full out revision, i just want things to be in OK riding order. And when i get another bike ill start stripping this one down for a propper rebuild.

Hope u enjoy it as much as i will be, as this is my first time doing a thing like this

ow and don't be offended if my english grammar isn't up to par. It's not my native language

so in short,

- change seals of tophalf
- check engine for wear and tear
- change sump seals
- check wheels /brakes
- Check starter motor (it spins soemthimes when starting)
- clean up, get rid of years of buildup crap
- Hopefully ride the rest of the year.

Anyone have an idea on what this is? it looks to me like some kind of chain helper or something..

hope the engine still is ok (i drove 3500kms whitout any hitch so hoping for the best)

have you pulled the can chain tensioner? it looks like it might be part of that...

Yeah i pulled that tensioner out.. but after opening the sump. Wierd thing is that the tensioner is round on the end, just as the parts diagram show. but the parts diagram fail to show this as part of that. (the tensioner sits directly on the wheelcase that holds the chain..)

Yggy, what excactly is your engine number? I can see it´s a Euro bike, where are you at?

The reason for asking is that there are some differences in cam chain setups between 1980 US/UK models and 1980 models from the rest of the world - in the US and UK the hy-vo cam chain wasn´t introduced in the 650s until the 1981 F2, in the rest of the world some 650s already had the hy-vo cam chain in 1980.

The part looks like half a cam chain rubbing block, does your bike have a hy-vo (multiplate) cam chain, can´t really tell from the pics?

I'm originally from the netherlands (bought the bike there) and living in Belgium now.
Ill look for the engine numbers, is there a site where i can check them? I have the serial number of the bike though. I looked it up in our filebase and it states that it's a 1980 c4 model.

No I haven't lifted the cam cover yet, I will do this this comming weekend. It must be one of those rubbing blocks against the chain, because u see some shaving on the block.. Still don't understand that these items don't appear on the parts diagrams.

I'm allso wondering if i should get a Clymers manual, as my haynes manual is CRAP.. it's far to vague..

So does any of u peeps have one lying around or an online version i can get?

The 1980 C4 starts at frame number KZ650C-033032/engine number KZ650BE114501 (the engine number is stamped into the block right above the clutch cover). The engine might have been switched at some point, but what I don´t quite understand is how your bike can have a hy-vo (multiplate) cam chain and a kickstart at the same time - if your bike has a single roller cam chain (looks like a bicycle chain) that part does not belong in there and I have no idea how it got there. Btw,you don´t need to pull the valve cover to check, you can see the cam chain through the oilpan opening.

Here´s a link to some more info about the 650 series (not that they got the frame and engine numbers mixed up, the numbers containing BE are the engine numbers).

AhA! You guys where right, it WAS the front camchain guider..

I dont seem to find the part number on the part list.. anyone have that partnumber lying around?








ow and i do have such a multi thingie chain (no normal bike chain) running through the engine..I also dont have that guider wheel on top (in between the cams)the cam cover has a black rubber that works as a guide i think.

hmm i looked it up, the partnumber is shown on the kawasaki parts list but only on the H1/H2 z650.. somethings wierd for this.. so maybe i have an american/uk bike ? (it states KZ650 on the frame number also so that might be a clue)

The 650 C4 does not exist on buykawasaki so it may never have been marketed in the US - to the best of my knowledge the first US 650 with a hy-vo cam chain was the 1981 F2.

Anyway, these were the partnumbers I could find for the camchain guides, they´re the same ones used on the 750 fours - maybe some of the guys with cross reference software could confirm that:

Front guide: 12053-1058

Rear guide: 12053-1054

Upper guide: 12053-1038

You can get them from Klasmo in Germany, the Klasmo part numbers are the same as the OEM numbers but without the - .

120531058 = 16,72 €

120531054 = 22,52 €

120531038 = 12,93 €

Note that all Klasmo prices are plus tax and shipping.

he thx man! i ordered one today at a local kawasaki dealership, they said it would be 19 euro's thats oki with me.. and they would do their utmost to try to get it to me before the weekend.

ah well sit and wait.. ill admire the engine for a bit while i try to clean the covers
