Hi, my name is Leonard Rice. I live in SW New Mexico. Just bought a 79 KZ750 twin project bike and a parts bike today.

Haven't even had a chance to go through all the boxes of extra parts yet. I used to be a heavy equipment mechanic and have done some work on three and four wheelers but this is my first foray into motorcycles.

The project bike seems to be complete and has compression. The original owner passed away and his wife sold it to the guy I bought it from (who did nothing with it) so there is no telling what was or wasn't done.

Does any one have a suggested order of things to check or should I just start trying to establish the basics of air fuel and fire and work out from there?

edit: Apparently, according to the serial #, this is a 1976 B1. The parts bike is a B1 as well.

Welcome to the KZR forum Leonard
As Steve says, we all loving pics of new project bikes.
First at all,you need a service manual to do some basic maintenance before you try ride the bike.

You don´t know what the PO´s done to the bike before and stay tuned for some surprising things you will explore
during the maintenance.

If I was to buy a used bike I would start with the basics. Rather than hoping or guessing that the previous owners had done proper maintenance I would establish a maintenance baseline by performing all the normal maintenance tasks listed in the Kawasaki Service Manual. Once that was done I would know exactly when each task needed to be performed again.

Until you can buy a Kawasaki Service Manual for your exact year and model bike you can use the one at

Also, see the following links for information about the KZ bikes. If nothing else be sure to read the part about JIS vs Phillips fasteners as it may save you time, money, and grief. Ed

Thanks for the links. Good information there.

I got a factory service manual along with two others plus two boxes of extra parts, seats, carbs cables, and God only knows what else. I only gave $150 for the whole mess so that leaves some funding to get it going. Now if I only had time.
