I checkout the tect-tips on the forum here about rust removal but was wondering, do you agree. Or is there a better way ( no disrespect to the person ) This was a problem before and its back and what would you seal it with.
THANKS EVERYONE.

Thanks Everyone. I believe I will remove the rust and try not sealing it. But will keep a close eye on it.

After the rust is removed you should not need to seal it. All you need to do is keep fuel in the tank and it won't rust. Rust happens when the tank is left empty or partially empty because moisture and condensation collect on the inside and form rust. That doesn't happen if fuel is in the tank instead of air. Ed

I've done a lot of tank cleaning and lining and like to use phosphoric acid to derust. Home Depot sells Kleenstrip Etch n Prep for about $14/gallon. Be sure to remove all petcock, sending unit, etc., before derusing. Rinse well with water and use some alcohol or WD-40 immediately after rinsing to retard flash rusting.

No there is no better way. But then I'm NOT impartial. As Ed said there's no need to seal the tank, just keep it full.

I've used the electrolysis method on a XS650 tank that I thought was too far gone. Came out like new!
As for tank liners, I use Red Kote on anything questionable especially if I am going to be investing in paint.

Dumb question: rust on outside or inside? I'm an old body man and I thought you meant rust on the outside.

I used brown vinegar. Very cheap and it works a treat.I soaked it for a couple of weeks then rinsed it out with soda, dried it and gave it a misting with WD40 to stop the flash rust. Came out great.

I vote with Jackelberry. Evaporust is the best thing I've ever used. It's not acid based and does not harm paint. It also requires no agitation. Just pour it in and let it sit over night. Unfortunately it's also expensive. You'll need at least 2 gallons at appox. $25.00 each. However, it can be reused. I've used the same batch on 3 tanks so far. I figure I'm now down to $15 per tank.
