Got a new speedo for my 83 1100 and was wanting to set mileage. Other than hooking something like a drill to it or disassembly is there another way. I see metal hooks beside each circle of numbers but didn't want to mess with them and break something.

Good question, I tried that one myself to zero the miles on a used set of clocks with a rebuilt motor, but not quite so easy.

With a background in the motor trade, and with modern digital odometers, everyone is at it now I regret to say. Some vehicles get clocked twice or more....it is ridiculous now.

Bike has 23k on it. New speedo has 620 .. So I'm guessing it can be done. Just looking to set to bike mileage.
I know what you mean about people messing with odometers. Used to be a car lot near me that no matter which car I looked at the mileage never quite lined up in window of gauge. They got caught resetting mileage and closed. But that was back in the day when you had to disassemble car and manually reset.

It's illegal to do. You have to take it apart. Might be able to disconnect the worm drive at the input shaft. Four screws to separate. I'll take pics later to show what I'm talking about. Work is calling.

Its defenitely not illegal to do.. I'm replacing my OLD speedometer with a NEW one. Only illegal if there is deception involved. Looking to make mileage the same.

My original one has a scratched site glass and the plastic is badly faded. I picked up another one that also has the turn signal canceler. My plan was to simply swap the odometer portion inside the unit. The housing of the old unit separated easily, but the new one (actually from the same year) doesn't seem to want to come apart at all. Anyone have an idea of something that might make the glue bond release around the seam?

I know the drill was not an option you were considering, but I have done them that way. Find an old tach cable, whetever, that can set into the tach and be chucked in a drill. Spin the drill to 120mph or whatever. It may seem stupid, and probably is in reality, but run a drill for 10hrs at this speed to gain 1200 miles, 100hrs to gain 12,000 miles. I added an inline fuse in the cord to the drill, as I didn't feel comfortable running drills for days on end, but it worked, and the drill lived through it fine even running for several days 24hrs a day. You may even be able to spin 200mph to minimize time. I didn't want to go much faster.

When I was in High School a kid would take his father's car then drive backwards around in circles in a parking lot to set back the OD. STUPID. He got caught.
The seal can be stuck. In my thread I took a small screw driver and tapped on it until it started coming apart. You can use RTV to reseal it.
