The headlight on my 78 kz650sr d1 (pt 23007-041 sealed beam)will only work if I have it on high and I was told that it has two separate elements for high and low and that it was possible that my low was burnt out. Personally when I first heard that I thought it was BS, but I figured I'd ask my fellow kzriders before going out and buying a new headlight.

Yes. Two separate filamaments, and that 's a GOOD thing because if one burns out on a dark and stormy night while you're riding around the curve you quickly switch to the other and you don't crash.

Here's a REALLY good bulb that is quite a bit brighter than stock, uses roughly the same wattage, and lasts a long time. Ed

The sealed beam from summit racing would be the easiest. Alternatively, you might be able to install the H4 halogen headlight from an 80s 750-4 or some other model. I got the lens unit, H4 bulb & dust cover from an 82 Ltd --- it was a direct fit. easy. probably the easiest thing I've ever done. H4 bulbs are pretty cheap & a spare is easy to carry on the bike. The lens unit was cloudy inside, so I cleaned it to a sparkle with denatured alcohol. :)

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI switched to a H4 unit. That allowed me to go with a HID unit. It is brighter, takes less juice, and has a blue tint. I can tell it;s more noticable to other drivers too. Somehow a normal bulb doesn't register to them but when they see the blue, I can see the car come to a complete stop when it looked like it was going to roll through the stop. It happens every day.

The sealed beam from Summit is a halogen. Maybe 3X as bright as the stock light.

Thanks. yes I saw that. just suggesting the alternative. the H4 bulb is small & easy.
that sealed beam above is an automotive type --- I think motorcycles use a different beam pattern, maybe wider. ??? kinda handy for deer spotting. :)

The HID has a wide light that is cut off at the top. Great side vision. B)

Do the ballasts n stuff fit inside the headlight bucket or did you have to do some finagling? Thanks.

Edit: if you installed a motorcycle lens unit & H4 bulb previously, the HID beam pattern could be wide additionally because of the lens unit, not just the HID itself.

It has a small remote ballast and plenty of cable. Order the relay too. It's free. I didn't know I needed it so the sent me one no charge. I love it.

Thanks for the pics. cool. Did you get the lightning blue? If I was to make the conversion, that's the color I'm leaning towards. blue, but not too blue. hee.

I got the light blue. It was supposed to be white but by the nature of the bulb it has a blue tint. I was pleasantly surprised. It came with a pig tail for another light so I cut it off and have been using the wire on other things. Good wire too.
