i have had a birds nest inside the megaphone of a kerker(unbeknownst to me) i pulled from the rafters and installed.
with the meg on it would start right up and idle fine, but wouldn't pull hardly any rpm.
with the megaphone off it would start right up and pull clean.
once i saw the small size of your tailpipe it made me wonder if the exhaust was restricted enough for you to be having a similar problem.

That's what I was thinking. That long small pipe coming from the collector, then the baffle might be "corking" it up. Do the thumb test on the carbs also.

Ok, tried pulling the silencer off, same results. The header collector is 2.5" O.D, and necks down to 2" O.D. link pipe into the silencer, the the can itself opens back up to 2.5" straight through. so there is no restriction at all in the exhaust. I did have the decibel killer inserted in the can, which re directs the exhaust flow a bit, So I tried it without that too, with same results.
Figured I would pull the pods and run without, same results. I then watched the slides whilst off the bike and revving it, only to see the slides only raising about 1/4 of the way. Does this tell me that I am losing vacuum somewhere?

I really do appreciate all of the tips and advice guys, thanks a ton. Oh, and I am currently at 40 pilots on 1&4, with 2&3 at 42.5 (cooler running when on the pilot circuit is the theory), the mains are at 142.5, and my last change was to shim the needles with a less than 1mm shim. I have gone through the spectrum of every main jet size from 127.5 and 37.5 pilots to its current state hoping it was just a lean condition. I really don't mind springing for new carbs, I was planning on doing it eventually anyways. If I can dial these CV's in and get some time in the saddle with this before the snow flies, that would be great. However, even though fun and challenging, if it aint going to happen with my set up, then I will spring for the CR's or RS's. I do have a few more motorcycles that need to get ridden too, so it isn't like I am "needing" to get this one done....but dang it, I want to ride THIS one :)

Oh, "SWEST", what is the thumb test?

If they don't rise there has to be a leak and if the carb mountings are good, most likely it is the diaphragms which are bad.

It's a way to test them if the diaphragms are bed. Sounds like they are or the slides are sticking. At your elevation, the CV's are more forgiving.

Yes, the slides move very freely with fingers. Carbs have undergone a thorough ultrasonic cleaning and totally gone through. I didn't replace the diaphragms because they are about $80 each, and that could have been money towards higher performance carbs. I have decided that I like tuning two stroke carbs much better :)

Fix em, then sell them when you get a better set. The CV carbs adjust for changes the VM's don't.

I bought a set of Mikuni RS34's and am asking myself why I didn't just get them from the beginning! This motorcycle absolutely rips! Clean hard acceleration all the way through the rpm range to redline. I thought I was up for the challenge to get the CV's working proper, and gave it an honest effort, but they just weren't going to happen with my set up. These flatslides rock and I highly recommend them :woohoo:

I also want to thank you all for the trouble shooting advice, I did try all of the recommendations and learned a lot along the way.

Rick

p.s. anyone want to buy a set of BS 34's?
