Oops,,, is this fixable?
12 Feb 2015 21:40
So I started working on my bike again. As usual, it starts with a new battery, new fluids, and a good carb cleaning. My carbs were pretty clean. I was putting them all together when I did this.. (see pic below).
So now, how do I fix this? I thought about soldering it, or JB welding it, or taking it to a guy who can tack it with a bronze welder. Wait, is it bronze or brass? Ugh.. the questions. Why those options? Well, because these jets are no longer produced.
Would I be able to solder this together?
Or JB Weld?
Or bronze weld?
Would any of these hold up to gasoline?
The head of the jet just needs to stay on the actual needle. I'm so close to getting back on two wheels. I was mad at myself for rushing through the end of the cleaning. But it happened for a reason. So now I need to find a fix.
Opine, please...

You could solder it at least I would but the one suggested for $6 plus shipping is the way to go.

So is this what I'm looking at? Obviously.. what I'm asking is will it fit my '83? My jet has a a hex head. Are the thread sizes the same? If so, I'll pick it up.

So I took my broken jet to a friend of my dad's from way back. He's an old school machinist and welder and all that. He said he'll clean it up and tack it up. Hey, as long as it gets my bike started before I can get the other jet.

The broken part is the main jet, which is screwed into the big end of the tube, which is called the jet holder.
The original jets are TK brand, and I thought they were all hex. The one in that link, for sale, looks like a Keihin (which may work, but you'd need one for each carb to keep things the same).
(Unfortunately, I don't have anything for the later TK26 cv carbs.)
If it were mine, I would extract the broken threaded part from the tube very carefully, and then buy a rebuild kit ($20 or so), which should have replacement main jets in them.
I wouldn't do antyhing that might make that jet holder unusable. You won't find that in any rebuild kit, and you will likely not find it for sale separately. Not only that, you probably won't find a single carb for sale, so you will end up buying a new rack of carbs just for that one jet holder. Whoever you have extract the broken part should really know what they are doing.
If you solder it (pretty sure it's brass, not bronze), you will never be able to clean out the gunk that accumulates between the main jet and the holder.

I agree. I could solder it but not many can and jet drills will be needed to size the jet. Try jetsrus on line to see if they have the jet. Be careful getting the broken part out.

If the mains have the same threading as the mains on the TK22's, then you should be able to use small-head Keihin mains.

Well, I took it to a man that cleaned it up and put it together for now. Will see how it works out. Will also keep you posted. The jet hole stayed untouched.
