Recently purchased a used but like new chrome header and was pleased beyond belief of the quality for the money. One small flaw that i want to address. At the south end near the baffle there is about a 1/4" of chrome chipped off. Before I take this on the road and allow the steel to rust and make matters worse id like to do a functional repair. My goal is to keep the area rust free and thus hopefully not get worse. Its near the bottom of the pipe and not easily seen. I was hoping someone can suggest something economical that's more than just paint.

Whats the problem with paint? If you cant see it,you only need to protect the steel and stop the rust getting a hold. A dab of silver paint seems the simplest solution.

I would paint it. I refurbished a nice muffler system & treated the areas that tend to rust with silver bar-b-que grill paint, and sprayed the entire cross-over manifold area. I was at the least hoping the paint would stick to the pitted areas & was expecting it to peel or get burned off the chrome, but the paint is still completely intact.

Shine it up with a Dremel and use clear nail polish to seal it.

I remember seeing chrome paint before but have not tried it... maybe a lite sanding and a shot of that ?

Will this part of the exhaust get hot enough to worry about paint burning off?

rivet a band of aluminum around it to cover it up.

A dab of chrome paint will do just fine.

As mentioned above, I painted the entire chrome cross-over/manifold area & it is still intact.
The muffler tips are probably at the coolest temperatures of the exhaust system, so any high temp paint should work fine there.

Sounds like the consensus is paint. I put this out there to see if anyone had experienced, lets say an Eastwood or equal company that had a method of touching up small chrome chipped areas. My hope was with all the experience and years of knowledge here this would be the place to find someone that would know if such a kit/process existed.
