KZ1100 exhaust options
14 Sep 2016 19:46 - 14 Sep 2016 19:46
Greetings,
I am new to the forum and to this model bike. I have owned KZ1000 classics but never a shaft drive. I want to find an exhaust system. It seems like the systems available are mainly for the 1000s. Can anyone shed light on this and or will a system for a 1000 fit even with mods? Thanks in advance.

I have the same set (13009-J) on my 82 1100A It required a tweak or two to fit, but has been well worth the effort.
The header pipe section fits to the head properly, but the first inside bend of pipe #3 made slight contact with the cross member of the frame directly in front of the cylinder block. Worked around that, and flattened the megaphone bracket in a vise to fit the angle of the foot peg bracket, which is longer than the one on a 1000J.
No issue changing oil filters, and the chrome finish holds up well. It works with the center-stand, if you want to keep it on the bike.

When needing to fabricate a simple hanger bracket, it's remarkable how much vibration is eliminated for the rider by including a small rubber damper which isolates the muffler vibration away from the frame.

The V&H system looks great. How is the ground clearance on turns?

I don't know much about the current V&H, but I can provide you two warnings...
The MAC is cheap and easy to find, and there black ceramic coated headers are just as good as anyone else's in my opinion, but the silencer (muffler) is a piece of crap - it is a backflow design and doesn't have enough volume / flow for even a stock 1000 cc engine. I'm going to replace all of my MAC silencers with universal mount Supertrapp stainless silencers in the near future.
The Delkevic systems come in a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle fashion - not some, but a whole lot of assembly required! I haven't tried mine yet, mostly because I am not looking forward to putting the damn thing together. It looks like quality stuff, just not very user friendly.
And two recommendations - the Kerker is expensive, not exceptionally well made or engineered, and not easy to live with as far as oil changes go, but it is the pipe to have on a big '80's K-brand superbike.
But the best - if you can still find one used - is the all stainless steel Supertrapp "Superlight" series - they work great, extremely well made, and will last forever if you take care of it. Too bad they aren't made anymore.

And I almost forgot - the Marving, you'll have to import it from the Netherlands in Europe. I've often heard they are pretty good systems. You could ask one of the members here on KZR (Bozo) what he thinks of them....
If you want one in Black Chrome, you'd better hurry - black chrome plating will be banned in most countries by the end of 2017....

There is a distributor in the US = I think the name is Monster parts, or something similar.Kray-Z wrote: And I almost forgot - the Marving, you'll have to import it from the Netherlands in Europe. Be aware this pipe requires removing for oil fliter and you can just get to the oil plug to change oil.

Not an issue for me, since I tend to avoid heavy-leans and really-tight turns. I'm paranoid of leaning too far, and scraping the center-stand...even though its not on the bike anymore. :S
It got a couple minor scrapes though. IMO, its better not to jump curbs, and avoid road-bumps in turns with passengers whenever possible.

Thanks for the heads up about the Mac. Always wondered why they were cheaper. The collector looks crude too. Looking at the Kerker or V&H their collector looks like a true merged unit. Whichever one gets chosen I'll do a write-up on the install.
Cheers!

Looking forward to some upgrades to this bike (busa rear arm and upgraded forks/brakes) along with the tire upgrades so handling won't be so spooky. I know the options are limited. Leaning in turns would have to be an option.
