I picked up one at Sears that has a telescoping handle and a white LED in the magnet end. I believe it was $8.

So far it hasn't been necessary to fish a part out of an engine but it was pretty handy when I dropped the container of 50 small washers. D'oh.

Got the telescoping magnet wand and fished inside through the only openings in the engine....nothing.As I said,I'm 99% sure I saw the "sparks" clear the frame when they launched, one towards the rear, pretty much no way that entered the engine, the other towards the front, both pieces most likely landed in the grass surrounding the area I was working in.Probed the space in the center of the engine below the cam chain and the spark plug holes with the magnet,I think I'm ok.If I had reason to believe something went in or knew for sure like dropping a nut or something in there I'd surely open the engine.

The only place I'd worry about is the crank main bearing cap over the cam chain. If needed the pan can be dropped.

Yeah and if a piece got in the main bearing cap, it can be taken off. Hope you don't have to. Chances are it would be spit out but if it cracks, that's another can of worms.
