So, if your engine holds 1200cc and the cooler holds 20cc, then you should put 3.1 quarts unless you are using Rotella, in which case you should 15w-50 and a Fram filter.

One other question I have is do the later bikes with coolers have the sightglass window a little higher up compared to the older bikes? I've looked at the 750/4 model bikes and the answer seems to be NO, but that's just based on photos I can find of the engine cover.

Id be worried about extra oil in pan being turned into a foamy milkshake.
I would think there should be an in line check valve to keep the extra oil in the lines/cooler.
Still recovering, some days are better than others.

I'm hoping routing the lines up and over the engine will keep most of it in the cooler. Should find out soon.

The only time there would be extra oil in the sump is when the engine is off.

You got something against milkshakes?

OK, I've read this whole thread and all I can say is you guys that think you need oil coolers are mistaken. You simply need to use the correct oil for your climate. If you live in a very hot climate you need.........

I know it's a joke but there was paraffin oil in the 70's. It was cheap (Ray Lube) and I used it on a old car I had. I pulled off the valve covers and there was a 1/2" coating of sludge in them. Ruined my engine. I rebuilt the engine and used Castrol GTX from then on.
I don't need a oil cooler now but I will have mine ready for summer. It pegged the Temp gauge so many times, it never came down again.
I'll be getting a digital one.

All that extra oil has to sit someplace until it gets pumped up through the lines .
I love milkshakes,I just prefer them in a cup instead of an oil pan. :woohoo:
In my experiance oil pumps and bearing surfaces prefer oil in a liquid pumpable/flowable state ,versus something that yuppies buy at starbucks for around $10.00 a cup. :woohoo:

There's plenty of room for a little extra oil.
