Hey guys. I have an 1982 specter 750. The previous owner some how lost a stud that goes in the block to screw your claps in from your headers and replaced it with a bolt from the hard ware store and stripped the threads out of the engine. Does anyone know the easiest way to remedy the problem? Oh yea and I have studs for it now but they are factory size. Thanks

If there's enough metal left you might want to have a Time-sert installed. Ed

You can easily install Heli coils. Buy the tap and coils at your auto parts store. You can use a small wrench to turn it in a little at a time, back out a little and keep going until bottomed. Time certs are better if there is enough meat to accept them Heli coils are readily available and can be done while the motor is still together.

The treads will almost grab so I think it will work with the time sert thing. Just to be clear though. The time sert is a threaded insert?

I'd use the Heli coils first. I've been using them for 40 years. If they strip out, time certs will work.

Agree on trying a Helicoil first. You can buy a 6mm kit at most autoparts stores. Timeserts are nice but you need to purchase an install kit which is quite a bit more expensive than a Helicoil kit. The Timesert insert is fatter and requires drilling into the head more too.

Some thing I learned is when Heli coiling a blind hole is get two kit's and take one of
the taps and grind about 3/8 inch off it and make a bottoming tap.
Use the unmodded tap to start the threads and when it bottoms out
use the modded tap to finish tapping the hole straight if not you'll have tapered
threads deeper in the hole.

Good point. I did that to one of my 6M taps when I chased the threads in a shallow hole.

In case you don't want to buy two taps and grind one,...they make taps for shallow holes that you can buy.

i am a big fan of Time-certs. They are headquartered in Reno Nevada and their tech service and sales response is phenomenal
O.d. on the 6mm insert is about.282" so it may not be possible to go from a helicoil to a Time-cert install. Think the Time-cert is smaller o.d.?
There are a lot of places on these old bikes to use these inserts on so the 70 or 80 dollars for a kit gets used over and over.
Just hand drill and set in place and install is quickly over with better than original quality holes. Their no. is 800 423-4070.
Just my 6 cents!!
Art.
Drill size for 6 mm Time-cert is 2.45" , Heli coil drill is 1/4"
