I have a kz1000j 1982 that no longer turns over and there is no neutral light anymore.

All the lights work and I've tested the clutch switch and starter button in fact change state. I've also
checked all fuses and confirm they are good.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bad or loose connections possibly inside the side cover.

How long since it last worked properly?

Check the connections going to the meters and controls. Pulled out, dirty, got wet?

Have you confirmed that the transmission is actually in neutral by turning the real wheel or pushing the bike? Ed

The neutral switch is behind the left side engine/sprocket cover --- the switch tends to get gunked up from drive chain sling. To remove the cover you'll have to remove the shift lever & probably the foot rest. The switch has a flag connector --- pull it off & clean it up. If the flag connector doesn't fit tight, re-crimp it a little but don't smash it.

As with Police specials... Does this model also have a kick stand switch...
Either case, bypass (jumper) the switches and test....

Many kz / GPz models have a safety interlock, you can't start unless in neutral, clutch is in and the side stand is raised. These often get removed and bypassed.

Either you have one of these three switches defective, or it was bypassed and the non-original wiring modification is playing up, either gone open circuit or corrosion.

The ignition feed to both starter solenoid and coils is only 'on' when the clutch, nuetral and sidestand conditions are satisfied, a simple AND logic circuit.
