Ok so I asked this question a few times on YouTube and wasn't given a good answer. I just picked up a 1980 ltd 550 that needs a lil work. This my first bike. And I was going to make it into a bobber which would fit me a lil more. But now I want to know if it's worth it as it being my first bike. I was also think about a ninja 250r and ninja 650...I know the 650r would be a better fit for being a heavy guy at about 260.

Would a newer ninja 250r be faster then a 80 ltd550 which is a inline bike from what I've read?

I doubt it but the most important part is the riding style. I just took a ride today to my daughter's place. A few bikes on the road. The Hogs and V twin cruisers I just passed by with a wave, then three crotch rockets caught up to me and we played lane tag for a while. The lead rider pointed forward and they cut through the traffic and in a few minutes were gone. There was no race and they seemed respectful of the big Z and the old guy riding it but went on their way just the same. It depends on what you're looking for. I'm happy with what I have but it isn't for everyone.

At 260 lbs there both gonna be small and slow.
I'd say look at a V-twin crusier around a 1000 cc.
1980 KZ650 F1
ZX750A1 motor.
Wiseco 810cc kit.
Zukiworks racing ported head.
VM 29 smooth bore's.
Dyna 2000 Ign. w/Dyna mini coil's
APE cylinder stud's and nut's.
APE valve spring's.
APE Track King clutch.
V/H KZ1000 sidewinder.
3.5x18 laced to a KZ1000 disk hub.
150/60/18 Shinko 006 Podium.
63" wheel base.

Every where I go with my many riding buddies and their modern rides, they all get the nods and smiles but everybody always comes to me to sit and talk about my 77' KZ1000 and most have great stories about their past bikes. It's a flippin' Motörhead magnet!

All the rest look the same to me, these stand out in a crowd. B)
You know, I haven't seen any Susies out there. Were they gobbled up too?

Some times it's not about standing out in a crowd it's more what fit's
dude said he's 260 lbs that's a big boy for a 250 Ninja.

Now as for standing out this thing is always a hit at a bike night.

I dress out at 240. I don't see me dancing in the turns like I did in my 20's at 165.

And you ride a KZ1000 not a 250 Ninja.

I just checked I'm 179 wearing jean's with normal pocket stuff,
T-shirt and no shoe's.

I ride a Z1 built out to a 1015. I wish I'd waited and bought a 1100/1075 kit for it. Maybe one day.

Yeah my weight is not the big problem just wanted to know which one is faster. I hold my weight very well. Most are surprised by my weight but it's all in my legs. Actually I have lazy 6 pack and work out everyday. I'm not worried about the style which is why I was thinking about fixing to my liking and getting my ninja 650r as well. I don't need a speed demon just something that I would have to rev to the moon as I hear with the 250...but that's what makes me want a 250. I think I like the idea that the bike is very manageable since it would my first. I work about 15min a way and I get not traffic there or back...but the prices are crazy which is why I would want a 650 which are about the same with more power

You asked: "Would a newer ninja 250r be faster then a 80 ltd550 which is a inline bike from what I've read? "

I hope you aren't pulling our legs. Assuming your question is serious consider the following. The Kawasaki Ninja 250R develops a shade under 30 hp. The 1980 KZ550 LTD develops 50 hp. So, which do you believe will haul you back and forth to work easier? ;) Ed

Ninja 250R Specs:

1980 KZ550-LTD Specs:

1977 KZ650-C1 Original Owner - Stock (with additional invisible FIAMM horn)
