I'm telling myself that the PO lost the correct bolts and the only ones he had where "too long"

I wonder what other surprises await me

The black bolts seem to be very brittle. Never had one snap like they did.

I am staying optimistic that is was a "bolt" issue

Nice job on the engine hoist. We usually just lay the motor on the right side and lower the empty frame over it. The only thing on the frame is the center stand so we can stand it up right away.

Like the others said at least they used metric bolts. On our 80' Suzuki GS 1100E the two center exhaust ports have each had both holes fixed using 5/16" SAE Helicoils. The two outer ports still have original metric threads. We converted it over to studs so now it has 4 - 8mm x 1.25 studs and 4 - 5/16" x 18tpi studs, what a pain.

Have you had the camcap off to check if it is helicoiled ? Was it on this engine you made studs for the caps?

Not yet Rolf, I just dropped the cover off for extra clearance when removing the motor. I will be using "stud and nut" to remove the caps as it's the kindest to the threads. The studs are simply a tool for diasasswmbly and reassembly as they would be too long to be a permanent fixture. The advantage of doing this is there is no pressure on the bolts until they are fully "in" so less risk of pulling threads. (I have used this method previously on other motors)
