Well the time has come for a change of front disks on my 83 Z1000R (the originals have become well warped, no lip just warped) and I am thinking it could be a good time to upgrade the performance of the brakes with something a little more efficient.
So I thought I would tap into the fountain of knowledge and experience at KZR.
The bike is not entirely stock (alloy swing arm, braided lines, RS34s, locally ground cams (1mm seems to have been removed from the base of the cam lobes) and the obligatory Kerker race pipe) so I thought a bigger set of discs and some multi piston calipers would fit in nicely......
So my question is, are there a set of larger disks and multi piston calipers off another model that will bolt on and not look too obviously out of place (I have a mill and lathe at my disposal so making brackets is no biggy)?

Cheers in advance.

I fitted two Kawasaki VN1500 discs to my J3 as they are the only floating discs I could find that fits the 7 hole pattern of the J/R/GPZ wheel.
Plus they are 20mm bigger than original. I am planning on using 4 piston calipers from the Suzuki GSXR bikes since they are made to fit 5-6mm thick rotors. The brembo calipers are made to fit thinner rotors I believe.

I only have this picture for now. These are Metal Gear rotors. 2 left rotors/disc measuring 300x5,5mm.

I know they dont look original, but a set of Lockheed calipers and slotted discs to suit would be a really nice period correct upgrade for your 1000R at this stage of her life, she deserves it . Great bike very lucky man

Not quite sure what the R disc size was, but I think the GPz B2 and maybe 1100R had 10 mm bigger discs - 270 - 280mm IIRC.

Some of the late GT550 shaft drives had 280mm discs in the same 7 bolt pattern too.

These brakes can be really sharp but also nicely progressive when sorted right.

p.s. if you used zx750 unitrack 3 spoke wheels you get 18" x 2.50 front and 18" x 3.00 rear -same rims as the 1100R. Using zx1100 or zx750 turbo 280 mm discs would be an easy conversion.

Cheers guys.
This is the sort of info I spent hours reading through the forums to try absorb (admittedly I am easily distracted by some of the awesome project threads on here).
Mr Rookie, that sounds like the sort of solution I had in mind. Thank you very much.

Mr Corp, I spent quite some time scouring Trade Me and wrecker lists after seeing your earlier posts on alternative wheels (as I quite like your idea) but unfortunately living in New Zealand our parts supply is very limited at best. Best option so far has been buy a doner bike but they a very few and far between. And worse still I live at the pointy end of the country which is a 3 hour dead end street from civilisation.

Barney, The Lockheed solution would be awesome but I am not sure those spindly forks and bicycle tyres could cope with the forces generated but will keep my eyes open anyways.
"Nice bike. Lucky man". Damn right bro. I had been looking all around the world for one a few years ago (mid life crises?) and whilst talking to a bloke called Graham (Croz to most) he reckoned he knew a bloke who might be interested in parting with one.
Whilst returning from a romantic weekend with the good woman I said to her I was going to take a short detour to look at a bike (for a "mate" of course) with the usual sigh/whatever response. The bloke opens his shed and wonders off to get the key for the bike (very trusting bloke considering the contents of his shed) my wife looks at the bike and said "you used to have one of those when we met. you should buy it"(we been together over 30 years). Im a VERY lucky man and I love my wife dearly!

Thanking you all for your very useful responses.

Cheers Mr Corp.
Now I am well confused after reading that link but as a reference my rear disc measures 270mm and the fronts are near as 280mm.
A local trader reckons he has got the 300mm versions available but I will wait to verify before I post make and model.
Bigger must be better even if I have to build a spacer,

Bigger diameter is better in the sense of more braking tourque, but smaller is better for a lower polar moment of inertia and reducing unsprung weight.

I think the 280mm is the biggest disc for the 7 spoke wheels,

My 550 is wearing Nissin 4 pots from a CBR600, they are lightweight and powerful but a bit grabby and I much prefer the more progressive feel of the originals.

Webike Japan has a 330 front disc set up for that bike. Kinda pricy but nice stuff
That's what I'm thinking on doing on my J3
