Thanks Eric. Im off work this week so Im getting lots done. I finally got the loom wrapped up and put on the bike (hopefully not to come off again for a very long time) and I had a good talk with a painter today. Very informative. I now have an idea of what I need to do a reasonable paint job. The most difficult part is going to be deciding on a colour scheme !!
Other than that,I blew the dust off everything, stood back and took stock. Still a hundred small things to do ( Im sure there will always be)
but the main jobs left now are the brakes, carbs and paint.
The family will be away for crimbo,so thats a good time to do the paint.I can clean out the spare room and set up in there. The smell should be gone by the time they get back.
I ll strip the carbs this week and drop them off at my local for an ultrasonic bath. So maybe Ill play with the brakes tomorrow. Calipers are done already,(new seals and SS pistons all around) I just have to overhaul the MCs and get everything bled up.

Sorry Leon (and everyone) ,bad news. I just got kicked in the teeth again! The chain isnt going to clear the swing arm pivot area. Nowhere near!!!!!
Im gutted. Took a couple of photos and left.WTF do I do with it now????
I put a lot of effort into the chain run.Making sure that I had a good line and clearance between the tyre and the frame. I didnt even think about horizontal clearance..
I also noticed that,it looks like one good bump and the chain is going to hit the bottom of the shock!
Great!

I dont see how thats going to work. The problem isnt that the chain is going to hit the swingarm, its that the chain is running on the swingarm.
Instead of a flat line between the top of the sprockets, theres a triangle (dont know how else to describe it) If I were to add a block of plastic, that would push it up even higher. The chain and plastic would be in constant contact.
Im going to go back tomorrow with (hopefully) a better head on and measure everything up. Free standing and with rider weight on it. I might be able to smuggle a bit from lowering the shocks. I dont know. Tomorrows a new day.

That sucks David,
Your just ahead of me a few steps.
I am gonna put my stuff together next week and might run in the same problem.
To avoid this I cut of the lower shock brackets and welded them more backwards and hope that wil bring my swingarm more upward and hopefully keeps the chain clear from the swingarm.
But I am afraid that I also will be needing Leon's solution of the plastic sliders.

Don't give up, problem will be solved ;)

Eric

Hi David, The chain line will get better with your weight on the bike, have you sat on it and looked at the chain angle..? There are a lot of bikes that run a teflon or plastic guard on the swingarm , my 1988 GSXR1100 had one stock. You can help chain clearance with different sprocket combinations too, what sprocket sizes are you using..? You May have to source shocks similar to the stock ones, I see the old stock shocks have a longer bottom section to clear the chain, the top of the chain doesn't jump around as much as the bottom though, you may be lucky and just have enough clearance... Bike looks good... ;)

Thanks for the input boys. I went down to the workshop today to have a better look. The situation is this.( 16 tooth on the front and 45tooth on the back) . With the bike free standing and the chain under tension, the chain is pushed up by the swingarm. With rider weight (70kg +-)
there is no discernable difference. With the shocks lowered to 10mm off the bottom of their range, and rider weight, there is about 3mm clearance twixt the bottom of the chain and the top of the swingarm.
All measurements were done with a hangover.
I dont see plastic, rubber or a skateboard wheel solving this,so, I am going to cogitate, ruminate and ponder (yes, all three) on it. Any other input is more than welcome.
