ok now i had a bit of an issue at the track so i decided to resurrect my old steering damper. i just cobbled together what i could using my trusty grinder and hand tools. i allready had the alum brackets and arm, which i made in night school a million years ago.
I just took a piece of alum angle and made it work. I had planned to do this before so I had a post welded to the frame neck infront of the tank.

This is what it looks like installed.
as it sits with no tape , it just looks like a big ugly chunk of alum angle.
So i put some black tape on it in an effort to come up with a better looking part. when i am happy with the look in tape, i will cut the black parts out with my trusty grinder and files. after tapeing it out like this, i thought , maybe i could cut a big KZ into it? what do you guys think?
or maybe i could just mount an electronic temp gauge over top of it? i have seen rectangular shaped temp gauges that may fit just right??
you can see all of the paint chips on my poor tank. i have another tank that i am working on now with a modern zx flush mount cap and dual pet cocks. (NO Dave, i did not say pets with dual cocks ) :P

I have been experiencing clearance issues at the track. My motor guards and my header hit the ground at lean. So I was very happy when I saw that our very own Mr Jack posted a Carron pipe for sale. Jack just happens to live a couple hr.s away from me.
The thing that I liked about the Carron was the fact that it was a 3 piece pipe. Very rare I think. This made me think it may be easier for a guy to get modified. the second thing I needed in a pipe for clearance was 1 that came right down the center of the bike (this means removal for oil changes.). I felt a pipe like this would be easier to get the need clearance with. I have a zrx swing arm so what ever pipe I buy, it must be bent to clear the wider arm.
this is what happed to my pipe and gaurds.

As it turns out this was one of the easiest mod ive done.
all i had to do was cut 1.5" off of the center section and have the expansion lip redone at the local muffler shop. the hhanger bracket even fit. what luck.:woohoo:
yuo can see that i have repainted most of my parts but the tank and other side cover are still on the bench. i plan to strip the entire bike again and do something nicer.
oh, Leon, it will be red again.:P

Jack tells me that,Carron , used to work for Wolf , and latter branched out on his own.
One interesting thing i have discovered is the performance has not changed .
i did some tests with the Kerker , before removal then repeated them with the Carron.
What I was looking for was low end performance dif I just assumed the Carron would be better with its smaller baffle.
But they seem to perform the very same. Although the Carron seems to be running leaner at the bottom and maybe richer in the mid and the same at the top. More testing is required to confirm this.
I did a series of wot pulls at various rpms to see where each pipe would bog at the bottom. They booth bog at about 3000 in 1st. and progressively get better as I test at wot at higher rpm’s.(500rpm increments ) at 4000rpm it will hiccup and try to lift the front wheel. My bike wont wheelie freely since I have a longer arm, longer duration cams big cams. And bigger 34mm carbs.
They pull the same. But the Carron pops bad on decal above 3000. the kerker would only pop if I decal from 6000.
So I think the Carron may be leaner?
In 5th gear the kerker will pull week at 300rpms but no bog. The Carron burbles here befor cleaning up. I think it sounds rich hear? Any ideas??
The Carron baffle is a dif design than the kerker .
the kerker is a straight section of perforated pipe 2 1/16” diam. Wrapped with glass.(home made)
The carron is about 1.5” diam but its larger perforations lead to an outer chamber that has other holes exiting around the main tube at the cap. There is no glass.

actually yours is one of the few bikes i like that has the frame and body colors matched.i think the black front end helps.
i think a belt sander could be a dual purpose tool for you sir,you know for finish work behind the grinder.:P
