I watched TaylorMade finish a custom ingnition cover gaurd while I was visiting. 3 layers of carbon fiber on each side of 10 layers of aramid. I'm told they need to be replaced if going down at triple digit speeds, but they won't wear through.

Thats pretty good. i can just imagine how many other parts i'd have to replace if i went down at tripple didget speeds.
At the end of the straight away i am in 5th at 125 mph braking hard and down shifting to 4th for the turn.
Not the place i want to go down. :woohoo:

when i painted my bike last, i used Duplicolor rattle can paint.i put on too much silver base under the candy red. the base did not flash and harden properly and this cause cracks in the candy months later. i have been redoing the parts 1 at a time so i could keep riding.
i decided to try my hand at painting with real paint so i stripped the 2 tanks i have.
i primed the tanks then put a mist coat on top. this mist coat gets sanded off. it helps u to see all the highs and lows with ease. i sanded with 400 wet.

here is the primer with the mist coat.

now i let that harden for a day .
day 2 i wanted to add some graphics. i sprayed some silver onto a crumpled grocery bag then dabbed it onto a sample.
Mark Wing told me he did something similar with a marbalizing paint, to some of his work, so i gave it a try. My 1st paint job.

Attachment kzpaint0061.jpg not found

this looks like it will work. so i taped off a tank. i am only putting this on the side , and there will be black stripes above and below it. so i will tape off the black stripes, then the graphics. then i will shoot the silver, then remove tape from the graphics part and add the bag texture. then i will clear it to protect it. after the clear dryes i can add candy red then more clear. then sand and buff.

here is the tape job.

now when i removed the tape from the graphics section, some black lifted. this is why i let it set for a day. i guess 2 days would have been better  .any one who actually knows how to paint ,please feel free to tell me what im doing wrong.i have since learned that i should not have used a 3m pad to sand the edges. i used the 3m pad so i would not burn through the edge, but it doesnt provide enough etching for the paint to grip. u must use 400 grit.

ok so its repair time. i taped it off and touched up the black. the best part is that the silver graphics will hide this well. I hope.

so here it is after the black touch up and the silver graphics are added .

Thanks. it did anyways. now , not so good
i will try and get another concentrate. if it doesnt look right i will use the duplicolor and then clear over that. i put 4 cts of clear on it now so i can always sand it back to where i am again .
we'll see what next week brings.

That's gonna be a cool paint job when you get it right. Are you going for about the same red shade as before? How many coats of the candy did you lay down? I'm no expert on candies but I think you have to paint a lot of coats.

i put down 3 coats. i can tell that it just isnt going to get dark enough. the duplicolor would only need 3 or 4 cts. i may end up using the Duplicolor if this doesnt look close.
i couldnt even get mad at myself , since i thought it looked pretty cool. aside from the pink part. i cant stop laughing at it. :silly:

I think that trying candy for your first "real" paint job is jumping in on the deep end. Seems to me that you need to screw up a certain amount before you get a good paint job.
