Hi all,

Just picked up a very clean 77 KZ900. Further details in my signature. I'm super stoked to have found this gem right down the street from me. PO kept this bike super clean. It came with the original motor and carbs along with a bin full of new and old parts. I got to ride it a few times before I parked it in the garage and started tearing into it. The brand new plugs are fouled and one of the carbs was leaking fuel which explains the fouled plugs. I suspect a stuck float?? Which is fine with me....it's mainly why I decided to buy now, so I would have all winter to tinker with it.

Will be starting a new thread to ask all you veterans about these CR race carbs and then some. From what I've read online, they don't play to nicely for street use and that's what I've been experiencing.

Anyway, I look forward to gaining more knowledge on these street beasts and have her running smoothly by the first warm spring day.

Thanks!

-Tom

They are laid out in order. Left is shifter side, right is exhaust side.

Could be valve guide seals.

I'm really hoping that's not the case as this motor barely has a few hundred miles on it from the rebuild...from what I'm told. When I was wide open throttle or higher RPM's this thing was moving out! Sounded very healthy besides the low speed jumpy-ness. Then the fouled plugs and the fuel leak on the far right carb leads me to believe it's a carb issue. The PO did mention he only rode it once this whole season, but started it and let it run a few times a week.

I'll start with pulling the Keihin carbs and inspecting them and seeing what jets are currently installed. Rebuilding the stockers is happening anyway, so maybe I'll install them to see if it runs right.

Thanks for the welcome!

I should have taken more pics of it before I started taking it apart, but here are a few.

Very nice indeed! Is that rear brake drum chromed or just polished to a mirror shine?

Thanks azman and KZJoe

I'm not too familiar on how to tell if it's polished or chromed. Seems to be chromed to me though.
