Putting top coat over older primer was created by Injected
Need some advice before proceeding with top coat on a gas tank.
I have a tank that has had all the body work completed and its been sitting with primer on it for about a year.
The tank has been covered up protected from dust waiting to be finished.
Is it better to lay down a fresh coat of primer? (which I would need to purchase) or just directly spray the first coat of color?
Was wondering if there would be any adhesion advantage?

What type of primer? If it's one-pack type, you can spray on top because the solvents in the color will bite in. If it's two-pack, catalyzed primer, then a good scuffing with 600 grit, or gray scotchbrite, followed by a fresh layer of primer, is typically needed. To know for sure, look up the data sheet for the primer material that was used. If the paint has a critical recoat time, it should be highlighted in the data sheet.

Its just rattle can primer, Duplicolor sandable automotive series.
Just wanted to know if a extra coat of fresh primer would help the color coat adhere better.

dont get offended, but I wouldnt even consider that primer as a proper base for bodywork, maybe for some gardening tools or a shed
get that thing off with thinners till you see metal again and spray some proper primer that has some zinc chromate or phosphoric acid content. at least itll have a chance to adhere to the metal.
my 2 cents of course..... ti's your tank after all
