Problem fitting gas cap was created by loneagle
I just finished painting a reproduction Z1 gas tank and I'm trying to get the cap installed, but having difficulties. This is the cap that I ordered with the tank. Please help.

I looks like the cap will have to be modified. It is too narrow where it fits on the hinge in the rear. Also it looks like a hole needs to be drilled in the front of the tank for the roll pin to hold the latch assembly.

Like to see a profile pic of the tank filler mouth from either side to compare it to an OEM tank.

The cap looks to be standard. On the tank....The back part (the pivot point) looks right but the front part for the latch is different than a standard tank. The front part is longer and is enclosed. Mine is shorter and is open. I've attached photos from my Z1 for you to look at...

I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

Yes, the front area is quite different. I'll have to figure out where to drill the hole to fit the latch. If I don't get it correct, the cap won't seal. Both the pivot point and the front area will have to be modified. Wish I had fitted the cap before I painted the tank. What a pain!

Thanks for the pics!

The piece on front was nothing but a cover. I just took a screwdriver and pried it off.

On the reproduction cap you usually have to file casting flash off around the holes. Also need to cut all the paint off the tabs around the holes on the side plates. Kawasaki masked those areas to keep them bare metal.
