KZ650 Chrome Chain Gaurd? was created by mrmach5
The chain guard on my 77 KZ650 is black plastic. I sometimes see similar bikes with Chrome metal guards. On e-bay there are lots of chrome ones for sale. Was the Chrome guard and option or factory accessory available for these bikes in the late 70's ???

I believe the chrome chain guard on my 750E1 came from a 750H1 (LTD). You may find that with the 650s some models came with plastic and some with chrome.
You can go to www.powersportswarehouse.com/p/Kawasaki find your model or a 1 980 650E1 or H1 and then once you find a part number for the chain guard cut and paste it into the search bar on the powersports page, press enter and then select "where used" which will give you a list. You can tell by looking at the parts diagrams which are plastic and which are chrome by their shapes

All 1977 KZ650 bikes and all KZ650-B and C models came with the black plastic chain guards, and Kawasaki did not offer a chrome chain guard option for those models. A chrome aftermarket guard was available from a company called Cir-Cycle. It has two tabs that bolt to the stock threaded tabs on the swing arm, so it mounts with no modifications needed. I have one on my 1977 KZ650-C1 that I bought back in the late 1970’s (see image below). Cir-Cycle is no longer in business, but their chrome chain guard for the KZ650-B and C models occasionally shows up on eBay, or maybe another member here has one he will sell. Be careful if you buy any other chain guard because it may have 3 tabs or tabs that do not line up with the ones on the swing arm. Ed

Some KZs came stock with a chrome chain guard. usually SR, Ltd & CSR models.
Standard model KZs usually had a stock black plastic chain guard.

I was considering ordering a chrome steel chain guard for my 750E but the 750H swingarm is different so I assume the chain guard won't fit.

Thanks for the detailed info,,,,, especially 650ed's photo. I kind of suspected that these chrome covers were aftermarket parts.
There are a least a dozen on e-bay right now. Not sure they are identical to yours Ed, as they all have two bolt holes on the rear tab ???

Those guards are for a different model.

Here are some images of the chain guard that fits the KZ650-B and C models (last image is in next reply). Notice the distance between the holes in the brackets is approximately 6.75 inches. The hole in the front bracket is about 2.5 inches below the top of the guard, and the hole in the rear bracket is about 3.5 inches below the top of the guard. The overall length of the guard is about 21.5 inches, and as can be seen in the last picture (next reply) the brackets are offset from the guard. I hope this helps. Ed

Thank you very much for the detailed photos and description,,,,,, you just saved me 30 bucks or more ordering a guard that would not fit.
All the ones on e-bay currently are the same as the one I posted the photo of, two holes at the rear tab. I'll just be patient and hopefully the correct one will show up on e-bay at some point..
By the way Ed, your 650 looks outstanding!!!

They look like the chain guard on my 750E1 which (chain guard that is) came from a recyclers yard 10 - 15 years ago and I thought it was from an LTD . Perhaps that was just what I was told at the time. Two holes in the rear bracket. also - I only use one. Could well be after market part.
If mine did come from a 750 LTD that doesn't automatically mean you could so same for a 650. Just thought a check might be worthwhile
The one on Eds 650 look much better.

Sorry if I caused any confusion
