Never thought of it, but might be a way cool effect.
Only concern I'd have is the heat, especially close to the head...........dont know if blueing is meant for THAT kind of temp??????

The wipe on stuff isn't as good as the plating bath stuff that caswell sells. Although, it's easier to walk into a gun shop and pick up a bottle of blueing, rather than order online and wait for slow shipping.
have fun,

Can you tell me what it would take to set up for black oxide finishing? My workshop landlord(machinist-fabricator) wants to treat some hinge pins and dowels he is using as part of a restaurant buffet fabrication project. We tried the wipe on stuff and were not happy with the results. Coating too thin and color not good.

I don't have too many pictures of before and after. When you do this stuff everyday, it's a bit much to photograph everything, especially single pieces. I do have pictures of notable things, though. I have a picture of a 1964 impala frame and engine somewhere, that showed the after, with some small parts done in black oxide. It's a regular photo though, I'll have to see about scanning it.

For small parts, most gunsmiths don't blue them the hard way (in bluing tanks and such) They heat the part up with a propane torch until just slightly red, the dip in in transmission fluid. Yes, I said transmission fluid. It will make the metal a beautiful blue-black color and won't come off like the bottled blue stuff.
I have done this on several small parts. It is cheap and fast. I have re-conditioned several old guns and for the small parts, this works great. For larger things such as barrels, I take them in to be blued. A Hot blue will hold up far better than any cold blue (Though I have used Brownells Oxpho-Blue and it hold up pretty darn good.)
Hope this helps your machinist friend!
