Gas tank key lost was created by KZman66
Anybody know how to get the gas cap off without the key? I lost the key to a nice replacement tank that I picked up and now I can't swap it with my old one. I don't want to mess up the new one trying something that won't work.

Which year KZ is it?

If it has the older style key, you should be able to open it with just about any other two-sided key.

Kawi didn't think to much about security where the fuel cap lock is concerned back in the 70's.

As far as I know all KZ caps are not keyed. In other words any key or a flat screwdriver that will fit will open it right up.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

That sounds about right.
I believe Kawi started using "real" keys for their fuel cap locks right about '80/'81.

A good locksmith should be able to pick that lock and make a new key for it for about $30-$45.
I was quoted $30 at a locksmith near me for the tank cap lock on my '84 ZN. Turns out it wasn't locked afterall, just "glued" stuck because the PO left fuel in it that had now turned to varnish.

There were no tumblers in the older ones, but there are two parts to the cylinder. So even if you get the top portion to turn with a screw driver it may not open. You need to get to the lower portion, about a 1/2 inch into the keyhole and turn there. Again almost any key that fits in will open it if it reaches in far enough to turn the lower part of the cylinder. The top is free spinning.

I'm willing to bet you probably could have even used a twig or anything narrow and strong enough to turn it.

That wouldn't be a lock then, silly.
It would be a simple latch actuated by turning it inside the fuel cap. :P

Heh

No tumblers until 1983. I have two 1982's and the same style key will open either tank. If it is an 1982 and doesn't open, then either the latch mechanism is problematic (= rusty, etc.) or you are using a different style key. But damn near anything, including a screwdriver, ought to work.

The latch mechanism needs to be lubricated occassionally or can get where it turns REAL HARD.

You may get results if you push down on the cap while turning key.
