kz650 tail on a 79 650 was created by CombatWombat
I am thinking about putting the plastic upswept tail from a different year kz650 on my 79 D2. Will it fit with the seat? It doesnt look like it will bolt right up but would it just be a matter of drilling a few new holes? thanks

It's been done by a few. The seat would need to be changed or modified. I don't know what else. I'll try to dig up a picture.
There's NightRider's '81 650CSR on page 2 in the 650 Gallery, who is putting an upswept tail on. Ask him how it's going.

The rear of the frame is different between an SR modle and the B or C model. It can be done though and Id give more details but some steel scrapper swiped my SR model frame. The seat is also different as was mentioned before.
Anythings possible though.

Or you could get out the pizza boxes and duct tape and make your own seatpan and tailpiece. You can experiment with shapes using comon houshold items with nylon stocking stretched over them to see what it looks like. Do a search, and check the new thread on balsa seat pan here. Yhis is a very cool project to do with fiberglass, aor carbon fiber, id you have the funds for that. I'd do one in glass first if you've never done it before. Pizza boxes are very versatile for making odd shapes, and perfect round shapes can be made with plastic bowls or steel soup strainers and very low weight, even if you leave them in the molding. My forms were trapped inside the tailpiece because of the way I built the pan first then experimented and attached the final tail to it. It still weighs almost 9 pounds less than the stock seat, even with the cushion and vinyl. If you're agressive enough to modify the seat, I'd just make a new one if it were me. That was pretty much my situation, too..same bike, BTW
