kz1000 chain questions was created by riverroad
Did the 1980 KZ1000 come from the factory with an o-ring chain? Mine has one, but it's about stretched to the max. It looks to be a 630 chain.
I'm thinking about putting on a 530 chain and sprockets.
Anybody know how many links I'm going to need for this stock swingarm bike? And what size sprockets I need to keep it at or about the same drive ratio?

I believe the bikes used standard chains. And it would have been a 630. Depending on how often you ride and environment a standard chain will suffice. Also regular cleaning and lubing will extend the life. Switching to the 530 is optional. As mentioned Jeff can probably help you in the conversion. They are stronger chains though being smaller. Not to mention the weight difference.

They did use a 630 oring chain from the factory. Personally I would rather keep the stock 630 size chain on a KZ1000.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thanks for the Z1 enterprises info guys.
I have heard that switching to 530 chain is a good idea. Just as strong and saves a couple ponies.
I'll probably go with a standard chain. I don't mind taking a chain off and soaking it in kerosene, drying it out, then soaking it in ninety weight. That's the way I used to do it back in the seventies anyway.
Anybody else have a special chain ritual or a more modern method they'd like to share?
