I have a feeling it is the same frame. I could be wrong, though. They look very similar, but for some reason I think they may have different seat and tank mounts. I know this doesn't answer the question very well, but that's my $.02

They are NOT the same. The Spectre frame is similar to the KZ750H [LTD] frame, except for the swingarms (spectre is shaft, H is chain). The KZ750E [standard] has a lesser neck rake angle, and is longer from the bars to the seat. You can swap tanks and seats between the H and the Spectre, but they do not fit onto the E. All the side covers swap. The E forks are different too (shorter, and the axle is on the bottom). The H and the Spectre forks are similar to each other, except for coloring, and except the Spectre has boots to cover the inner fork tube.

Hey Apeman, you're saying the Spectre and the "H" (like my '80 750 LTD) have the same tank mounts? I'm looking for a bigger tank for the LTD (12.4l is way too small). Any idea what the fuel capacity of the Spectre is? The 750E has a 17.3l tank but I don't know if it'll fit. Thanks in advance.

Other than paint, the Spectre and the H [LTD] tanks look identical to me. The E tank mounts are very similar, but I think the E tank is longer (front to back). (Not real sure though, since I never measured them!) Maybe I will get a chance to do that in a day or so. Good LTD and Spectre tanks are common. Good E tanks are very rare (since they sold fewer units here in the US).
I agree the tank size on the LTD is too small for anything other than short distance riding. I refill mine about every 100 miles. (It has a little more than that, but I do not like fiddling with the petcock, switching to "reserve", while I am on the Bay Bridge during commute hours dodging cell-phone talking SUV drivers.) Since my commute is about 23-24 miles round trip, that gets me through four days.
KZINAZ, sorry about hijacking your thread. BTW, another difference between the E frame and the Specter/H frames is at the tail. The frame metal configuaration is much different. (The E is set up for a boxy plastic tail fairing with a plastic inner fender, and the other two are not.)

KZINAZ, I'm the one who should appologize for the hijacking but now that I have control of the cock-pit....Actually, kzinaz is a friend of mine and I may just have to hijack his tank as well. At the very least, when we next hook up, I'll do some measuring on his and mine (give me a call bro). BTW, apeman, my commute is 80 miles round trip to work and back so I have to refill every time I ride to work. BUMMER! Between his bike and the local bike yard, I'll see if I can get some tank measurements and let you know what I find.

the reason i ask is b/c i saw a nice spectre on here (the one with the two baby blue stripes on gray paint in the picture postings) that i'm trying to duplicate, or at least make similar. so i guess i'm going to have to cut the frame and weld a supporter bar? any info or input would help. thanks

I have an '80 H1, my buddy has an '82 N1. The tank mounts are not the same.

And since the 1983 N2 Spectre and the 1983 F1 LTD swap alot of parts, those are another two bikes you can eliminate from your list of interchangeable bikes.
I can't say for certain but I also believe the 1984 ZN700A1 and the ZN750A1 have a frame similar to the Spectre.
