front brakes. ideas/questions (zx parts) was created by 77KZ650
I have a few ideas I want to throw out there for ya gang, let me know your thoughts:)
Fist off, I was planning on doing a dual front brake upgrade, and using the 92 zx6 brakes i ebayed. however, these calipers are 4 piston, and wont clear the spoked wheel. so scrap that plan or go with a mag wheel right? (its been done, there was a post awhile back about using 6 piston calipers on a mag) I really dont want to go through this amount of trouble trying to find a good mag wheel and dual discs since im planning on putting a zx front end on next yr anyway. so now, looking at my pile of parts, i realized that the rear caliper (2 piston) will easily clear the front wheel spokes. (i have another rear caliper (single piston) that came with my 89 zx6 rear-sets) so the new idea/plan is to use rear brakes on the front as well as the back, and save the 4 piston calipers for next yr to go with the front end swap. my only problem, besides that I need to make a custom bracket, is that my kz rotor is too thick (7mm). Can this be thinned safely/cheaply? Can the brake pads be ground down enough to clear the wider disc and still have much life/effectiveness? or should i try to find another rotor that fits?
I could run the stock kz caliper till next yr, but I really want some better stopping power, and these are the parts i have to work with so far...
What does everyone think?
Scott

Scott,
I'm right there too. I bought a brake system off of ebay that was supposed to be from a ZRX1100. Well it wasn't. In fact, I can't figure out where its from. The system that I got has the same two per side piston system that you have and (from a preliminary look) won't clear my mags either. So don't depend on just getting a pair of mags and clearing it up. I'll use the master cylinder but the calipers are probably going back on ebay unless I can think of something to do with them.
If I can do it I'll let you know but I wouldn't spend the extra money on mags unless you know ahead of time the calipers will fit.

The original plan was to go with something like this.
maybe with 6 pistons vs 4, the 6 are narrower (pistons are smaller in length as well as diameter?) I think the new plan with using the rear brakes on the front will work if i can figure out the disc thickness problem though.

hey 77, those calipers are 3-3/8" across. I think they're the same as the late 90s early 2000s (01,02 03) GSXRs, though the mounts are different. they are VERY close to the spokes on the inside, don't know if they'd work on wire spokes or not. the discs on the Z1R are 5mm thick.

I could tell you all the models that use that six pot caliper, but then you would be outbidding me on eBay

will most kz rotors swap? I see a drilled rotor on ebay from an 81 440, is it a 5mm? and will it bolt on?
