Thanks for alll your help. You guys have been extremely helpful. I think I'm just gona have to ride my skinny ass around on that 250 rebel until the fall and look for a better deal then. I can say for sure though, that when that time rolls around I'll look for a KZ. I love how these bikes look and ride. Thanks again for the help.

When I bought my SR I had looked quite a bit and knew the Kelly Blue book said it was worth I think somewhere between 900 & 1000. But as I have seen supply and demand dictate prices too. I gave $1400. It is all stock and it's really clean. Original paint etc. The only defect I can find cosmetically is battery acid spots on the frame and left exhaust under where the battery is. The guy I bought it from had a receipt for $750 worth of service and parts. New tires, carbs cleaned and a whole list of stuff. So I felt I would have done most of that anyway. i felt ok about paying a bit more. And man is she clean! Everybody comments that she can't be 27 yrs old.

Too bad you couldn't have used that $1 per CC rule, that's would've been a sweet deal!!!

chopstar, don't get hung up on the $1 per cc rule for KZ's, that's just a generic starting point. Some KZ's are obviously worth a lot more while others are worth a lot less, but you gotta start somewhere, and a $1 per cc is as good a place as any :)

Some of you guys could go around the country giving seminars on how to get a KZ for next to nothing. I know I'd attend!
I stopped by a little bike dealer here in LA. He has a contract with the city, and buys the used KZ1000P's, refurbs them, and sells them for $3,000 to $4,000. They look pretty much like the cop bikes (winshield, fairing, seat, etc.) except he removes the lights, sirens, emblems, etc.
So he takes me to his 'storage facility', and there's about 40 old bikes, all KZ1000P's, some with just frames and motors. Still, he wanted $1000 for anything that looked like it might run again one day. Sure, he was a dealer, but I was thinking I could give him maybe $300 and I'd be doing him a favor. Not a chance.

IMO, for $500, hard to start, and bad tires it should have

clean title

keys that work everything OR keys that can be cut from code and the code OR plan on $90 for keys

no rust, especially on fork chrome! OR plan on new fork parts

no more than a dusting of rust in the tank OR plan on at least filter, maybe coating, worst case a new tank.

no missing parts such as side covers or airbox.

good chain and sprockets OR plan on $100+

no scrapes on engine and no broken fins

good compression (low comp will cause hard starting) OR plan on some serious work and maybe serious $

good original paint or at least a pleasing patina

no dents

good brakes and controls

straight wheels and if tubeless, minimal corrosion on rims where bead seals(no more than can be easily removed with a wire brush and no pits or grooves big enough to make for leaks)

good saddle.

factory luggage rack a plus
case guards a plus
