"How do y’all get the front wheel off the ground for service? I’ve read that people will place a wooden block under the crank case? Do you use a jack to do that?"
You could do something like this
You could do do it with a single 2 x 4 under the steering head but one bump could send the whole thing sidways...and down

Before I got my lift I used a bottle jack when it was on the center stand. Now I can do almost anything.
In order to remove my 110/90-19 wheel I have to remove the calipers and fender. The larger tire makes the bike more stable on and off the road and here in the desert that's a must.

The factory service manual says to remove the wheel.

Mine come right off and they have to come off to remove the wheel.
