As well as being wider J model seats aren't hinged. They are entirely removable. Held on by two prongs on the front of the seat that locate into two hooks on the frame. The rear is held down by two prongs which can be rotated and locked in place by the seat/helmet lock.
The frame rails on the "J" series bikes (81 on) are wider apart than the earlier 1000 so hinge and catch positions would need some work (duckbill needs to be widened to fit the later frame)Bit of an old thread, but no point in starting a duplicate. I also have a 82 1000 LTD and am looking at seat options. Can anyone else confirm, or provide more details on, if the smaller four LTD seats swap (with some minor tinkering...moving pivot points it sounds like) to the 1000 LTD? Does "fit" mean the lock catch and other bits need to be adapted as well?

Not sure about that attachment method you're talking about. My 82 has a hinged seat.
I did measure my 79 650 B. Width across the frame in the middle of the seat is the same as the 1000, but the 650 is more narrow right behind the tank. I believe the 650 was 7" and the 1000 was 8. Need to double check.
I do know my 650 seat sort of fits dimensionally. Hinge and catch spacing is off and the rear of the seat doesn't mesh well with the Ltd frame.

It looks like we have another J confusion.
I believe Wookie58’s reference was to the J-engined LTD of 1981-82.
I think Warren3200gt’s comment was about the KZ1000J, which also had the J engine, but was quite different from the KZ1000K/M models.
