Don't know the specific thickness but if one pad is a lot thinner than the other then replace. If they are about an 1/8" thick I'd replace, pads are cheap, hospitals are expensive.
Go here to see breakdown of the brake:

If the link doesn't work go to Buykawaski.com through this link and then go through the selection process to get to your year and model.

Once you take the bolts that hold the two halve together to the frame it should have just fell in to two pieces. I guess it is time for photos.
You should have removed bolt#14 and nut#2.
The pads are #9 & #10.

Great a picture.... I took out the bolts (#14) & the nuts (#2) with no luck. Do I also have to remove the phillips head screw (#6)the washer (7)& 8 to remove the inner pad? Should the outer pad(10) fall right out? Seems like the caliper piston is getting stuck in the circular part in the Y shaped bracket (where the pads ride)maybe that's the pad that's getting stuck.Sorry but I've never done this on a bike before only a car........ Would it help if a took a pic ot two??...JCI'm at a loss for what you are referring to??
