best ninja wheel for gs swingarm? was created by 77KZ650
Hi, just wondering what I should go with for a rear wheel/tire for my 650 which is getting the gs1000 al. swingarm (if i can find one on ebay, or somewhere else this spring). I want to get something wider than stock, and was thinking about a ninja wheel setup, converting to a disk brake in the back. any suggestions? something like this?

Whatever you get you better match it in the front.

the Gs swingarm will take a 4.5" rim and you could run a 170 tire with no problems.

I will tell you right now not all 170s will fit with no problem there Galaxian (if you pardon my disagreeing with you on this one)- I have a 179 on the GS swing arm right now and it touches part of the aluminum on the front of the swingarm- needs a slight triming to fit my particular brand of tire- some tires have different sizes I guess- but if you trim the aluminum a bit- 180 will physically fit on the swing arm- I can't tell you at this point how the sprocket and such fits- because I don't have one for my rim yet?
I will tell you stay away from the ZX10 with the three quadrant cush drive- they only made it for two years!

Cr you can disagree but i fitted a zx6 4.5" rim with a 170 tire into my gs swingarm with no problems. Now having said that a 160 is a better choice for a 4.5" rim to begin with. Also some tires may be actually shaped differntly than others and lastly if you move the wheel toward the rear that may help as well. Just my thoughts.

Mine is absolutely moved to the farthest rear as posible, just lightly touches swing arm- how much clearance do you have? I will be willing to bet it is tire diference- and the ZX10 rim from 89-90 is an aberation- an 18 inch rim.

If you are going to discuss tire clearance then you need to specify the make and model of the tire. There are differences in height and width between different manufaturers of the same size tire, and even between different models of the same size tire from the same manufacturer.
Eamples:
Dunlop D220 160/60/ZR17 diameter 24.88" width 6.46"
Dunlop D208 160/60/ZR17 diameter 24.84" width 6.46"
Bridgestone BT56 160/60/ZR17 diameter 24.9" width 6.4"
Bridgestone BT014 160/60/ZR17 diameter 25.0 width 6.4"
Metzeler M1 160/60/ZR17 diameter 24.92" width 6.3"
Metzeler Z6 160/60/ZR17 diameter 24.57" width 6.46"
And a bias ply tire:
Metzeler Lasertec 160/70/VB17 diameter 25.83" width 6.34"
Information found at the respective manufacturers web sites.

As well as a Z1000J I've also got an 83 Katana (same swingarm as the early GS1100) which I've put on a 17x5.5" GSXR rim with a Bridgestone BT010 170/60 tyre, it mesures 173mm wide (6.81") The only mod I made was to slightly chamfer the bracing on the inside of the swingarm for a bit of extra tyre clearance.
