I'm just trying to get a more specific identification on my kz440 (its an 80/81 model). I'll probably answer my own question in the following post.
The engine number is stamped KZ440AE-078026 and the frame number is stamped KZ440C-006293 - the bike was first registered about 1982 in this country which puts it around the 1980/81 mark for manufacture.
Now, my question is - when people refer to the model as being an A2 (as in my sig) or a C1 are they referring to the engine number or frame number.
I would have thought the frame number would be the relevant piece of information. The owners manual I have for the bike (apart from being printed in Oct. 1979) is for a z440-C1 (hence the frame number question).
A quick check on the kz400 site shows for 1980 the models being Kz440 A,B,C - so, would I be correct in assuming that I have an 1980 kz440 C model (being that they have a B2 listed for 1981).

And to make things even more confusing, Kawasaki had different model of the same displacement in different parts of the world.
Since your owners manual calls it a KZ440C1, then I'd guess that's what it is.
How about posting a pic so we can see what a C1 looks like?
Here's a pic of an 80 C1 from kz400.com (I hope Ibby don't mind).
And a Link

thats pretty much it. Just add some rust around the headstock, take the shine off the pipes and put a rip in the seat and you have my tractor
