Will Electronic Ignition Help Solve My Problem?

My bike is getting hard to start. Sometimes it just cranks, but wont start. As soon as I release the button, it will fire, and maybe start. Other times it kicks right off as soon as I touch the button. Warm or cold, does not seem to have a pattern. The points are nearly new, and the gaps are right.
One other thing I noticed, I have a ticking noise that sounds more like a spark leak than valve train. I put bike in the shed and turned out the light to look for a spark, and saw none. I removed the point cover and even saw no spark at the points when running. I assume that is good?
Thinking of installing a Dyna S electronic ignition. Any thoughts?

I'd almost bet that the WG relay mod would solve your starting problem.

Have you checked out the "Filebase" link under the "KZ Information" tab at the top of the page? Tons of useful info there.

Pretty sure that's what they are reffering to. Thats what I am planning to do. Make good sense to me. Mine really acts like a voltage loss during cranking and I can see how this mod would solve that problem.

BTW, I just bought a '83 Spectre 1100. Waiting for the seller to come up with the title before I pick it up. Looks like I'm going to part it out though. i just don't need another project.:P

Does sound like a weak spark, had same basic problem as you. Won a set of Andrews coils with Accel wires on ebay and now it lights off so easy even on the coldest morning. When warm it starts within 1 revolution of motor, and I'm still going to do the coil mod.

I dont thnk I'd spend money on an electronic ignition until I had gotten a little digital multimeter and a manual and checked out all the electrical pathways from points to plugs. I once traced a weak spark to a corroded connection underneath the battery. The battery breather had come off and acid had dripped down on a connection. Once it was fixed up the bike ran fine.
With a meter you can also check the voltage at the coils. The WG coil mod is worth doing even if you only gain a half a volt.
Good luck.
