Update on Acewell digital speedo/tach...

Got mine on Thursday, was just too lazy to really fart around with it.

Hooked it up to a battery tonight. It works great! Bright! The line of vision isn't what you'd expect. You have to kinda look at it at a fairly severe angle. If you are mounting it in place of stock gauges (at that angle) and have standard bars, you may find it a bit dim.

I mount my gauge in front of the tree over the light with a fairly severe angle so that when I am tucked it's still in front of me. Safety first! I don't want to have to look down at speed to see my gauge.

Anyhow, here's a few pics, for size and color perspective. Forgive the low quality on them, I was taking these in a low light situation in the basement shop.

quick question for ya, do you have a stock gauge to compare it to, size wise?

i ask, because it looks a bit smaller. either that, or you have some big meat-hooks. 8^)

I do not. Sorry.

I'll say this though, it is definitely smaller.

I have no larger meathooks. haha I'm 5' 8" and properly proportioned.

i like it. the blue lighting contrasts well with the lcd.

I think I am going to go this route as well but not until after the bike is all together...with my luck I would play with it too much and try to put it on another bike then have to go and get another...my vtr is clockless right now..

I finished installing mine today, will have to make a shim to adjust the mounting angle, since its vertually impossible for me to see mine clearly in the daylight at a more or less direct line of sight. I mounted the magnetic sensor on the chain guard, and a small neodium magnet to the rear wheel. It seems fairly stable and thus far accurate, even with the sensor at an angle to the wheel.

Have you had any trouble with the tach pickup wrapped around a plug wire, or have you got it hooked up yet? On my bike, it is horridly inaccurate, it bounces all over the place from 300-2800 rpm at idle, I'm suspecting it doesn't like the thick rubber plug wire shields. I might try connecting it to the negative side of one of my coils and adjusting the revolution per pulse setting to see if it stabilizes..

I'll go take a couple pics of the new speedo with the stockers next to it for anyone wanting a size reference.

I hooked the tach wire to the negative side of one coil, and its useable now, but needs somthing inline to stabilize it. It varies from 900-1300 rpm at idle, which is set about 1000 rpm.

Hmm. Have you considered doing the relay-powered coil mod? I wonder if the spark is too weak to detect reliably?

already did the relay mod, right after I got the bike.

How many coils did you wrap? How did you go about it? The more coils the better.

I plan on doing as many as 15 revolutions around the wire. A good way to hold it would be heat shrink with a small hole poked into one end for the wire to feed out to the speedo through.

I put a magnetic pickup on my bike to make up for the busted speedo gears for the time being. Granted I'm using a bicycle setup, but it works quite nicely until around 55mph - and this is my point.

I was driving down the main highway in town here, and I *know* I was doing around 80, but my speedo kept showing 54, and then jumping up to 70-something every once in a while. So it could just be that my sensor isn't strong enough to pick up the magnet, but I thought that I would pass that along. The magnet itself is a damn strong earth-metal magnet, so that's not the weak link.

Nice gauge btw! I'm gonna have to look at something a little different for my ride soon too..it has all the idiot lights built in, right?
