Newbee with a question was created by Redeemed
I have the opportunity to purchase a Kz750 with 17000 miles for $4oo. The only known problems with it are a bad solenoid and the tank leaks out all the gas at the cutoff valve. It looks to be in good shape, no rust, seat is not cracked, all lights are fine. So, is that a good deal? I have never owned a bike before but have always wanted one. The price makes me want to get it. What do you guys think?

Bad starter solenoid?
Does it have a title?
Does it run now?
Will it need tires/chain/sprockets?

What year is it?

Bad starter solenoid? yes

I'm not sure about the title, didn't ask:(

It will not crank because of the starter solenoid, but will turn over and try to crank when you jump the solenoid. No gas and I haven't been back to try since I just stopped to look at it.

Tires, chain, sprocket all appear to be in good shape.

To me...$400 for a twin that doesn't run is a little much, but I'm a cheapskate.
If it's doesn't have a title it makes it worth even less.
If you have the knowledge on how to work on these ol' girls and enjoy a project (or a challenge), the price may be ok.
If you have to have some else work on it, you could likely spend more money on it than what you paid for.

I'm sure some of the other guys will jump in here soon with some good points.

I have a friend who owns several dirt bikes and has been working on bikes all his life. He offered to help me work on it. I thought I might offer the guy $300 cash and see what he says. The guy said he had it running a month ago but he looks kinda shady to me.

Remember, getting an old bike means you're getting a hobby, not just transportation. Often they require new chain, sprockets, tires, oil, filter, carb maintenance, and some minor electrical repair.
By the way, is this a twin or a four?

I didn't think Kawasaki made a KZ750 4 stroke in 1980?!

Hmmmmmm, when I look at kawasaki.com, the only thing it shows for 1980 is the KZ750 G1-LTD 2, which is a twin.
Now I'm confused!
