Electric Speedo trouble was created by KawasakiBob
Well i've done a search and couldnt find my problem I'm having now..
My speedo needle jumps all the way up and back down non stop when I'm riding, but evens out at 55+ mph and stays accurate only then..
The stator is new on the bike and it checks out ok....possibly the speedo drive?

I just checked at Kawi.com, and the speedo on your '82 J model is cable driven, not an electronically operated unit.
The two things I'd suggest doing first would be to remove the cable from the housing and check it for any wear/fraying that might be causing it to snag on the inside of the housing, and also check to make sure the cable itself isn't kinked or binding anywhere.
Next would be to pull the front wheel to lube and examine for wear/damage the speedo drive assy gears and receiver.
If those show good, then it's probably going to be the speedo itself that is suspect.
Being as how it's a sealed unit, your best bet would be to either swap it out with another "known good" speedo, or ship it off to Bob (canyondancer) to have him give it a thorough going over/resto.

OK this is just wierd.
Off the wheel is are wires that plug into the speedo coming directly from the front wheel speedo drive unit, and nowhere can I even see a cable.
Looking at Kawasaki's fische, they show the wiring that I see, but if you go under cables, they list a speedo cable for it.
I'm confuzzled now.

Kawasaki shows an 82 KZ1100D2 Spectre, but not a 1000 Spectre. The J model is the Standard version, M is the CSR, and K is the LTD. The confusion arises because pretty much everyone calls the 998cc motor the J model motor. The Spectres are D models.the 82 spectre is electric its a j
My guess is the speedo drive is the problem.

It would likely be the speedo receiver. Did you just grease the front bearing or anything?
