It sounds like it is similar to lighting dimming systems that send control signal over the same line as power supply....

Hmmm... I wonder about the sense coming from the battery. The battery's condition and the fact that its output is the direct result of the reg/reg feed seems to make it a poor cantidate for providing the sense info. I guess they know what they are doing since they are about the biggest aftermarket manufacturer. Thanks for the explanation!
The brown sense line is meant to sense battery voltage. The red output wire from the regulator also goes to the battery. They go to the same place... the battery.
