1979 kz650sr ignition switch was created by ridgerunner
Ok guys I need an electrical person to help me out on this one. I have a 1979 650sr that is in dire need of an
ignition switch. I can't find anything that matches mine, even tho a lot are advertised as being the same. I did buy a switch for a 1978 but it is diffirent. Ok heres the deal. The '79 harness has a yellow lead and the brown wire bypasses the switch. The 78 switch has no yellow and has a brown lead on it. Question: How do
I make the '78 switch work. I found wiring diagrams on both models on this site but i can't figure it out.
Thanks for your help.
This is a great site.

Just for clarification ,when you say you bought a 78 switch, you mean a switch for a 78 sr?
I haven't look at the diagrams but I do know the bike won't know the difference in colors, can't you just plug the brown lead into yellow on the harness?
Ok Ive looked at the 79 D2 diagram which is what my 79 sr is..what is the 78 off of, a 78 650 what?

Welcome.
There are a few different '78s.
Here is my make on it:
1: Your green/orange goes to '78 ign's green/orange
2 whites go to 2 whites
red to red
blue/red to blue
yellow to brown
brown spliced into Green/orange to give power into the brown circuit when turned on.
2: I also think your Yellow and Brown could both go to the 78's brown, as both ways (1 & 2) would power up both circuits.
Have some spare fuses ready in case I'm wrong. :pinch:
Anyone else want to try a stab at it?

Ok plugged the brown into the yellow and jumped the brown to the brown start sw. Everthing seemed to be fine and then I hit the start button a couple of times and the starter worked. The third time I tried the starter worked but the lites got real dim and wires started getting hot. Must be a dead short somewhere in
the thing. I unplugged the point and ignition leads from the coil and lites got bright again. Now the starter will not kick in. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Clean the starter button with electrical spray contact cleaner.
I find I sometimes need to press the starter button and hold and wiggle it around before it makes contact and works.
