I once heard it was cause of some butterfly in some rain forrest somewhere.

Are they stock directionals? Check voltage and resistance. Sometimes resistance is futile. I am sorry I couldn't resist.....see!

when i had this problem on my 76 KZ900 i replace both flashers with the heavy duty replacement flashers from auto zone which solved my problem.

The turn signals on both the front and back on your KZ1000A1 have a strange ground system. There is a metal ring that fits under the mount bolt to provide ground and this ring has a wire (black/yellow) soldered onto it. The wire then plugs into the wiring harness ground which grounds to the engine case. Since the ring sits in a place that is often plauged by oxidation, ground can pretty easily be broken and MANY Kaw turn signal issues are just the result of a poor ground. Check the grounds on all four signals. The turn signal relay itself is prone to failure. A heavy duty relay doesn't last any longer but allows a wider range of voltages in the event you are not using OEM type bulbs (Stanley specification). Relays can be had at any autoparts store.
