1982 KZ1100 shaft Drive Spectre - 99% lights failure was created by gregzim
Hi To all KZ electrical specialists.
I rebuilt my 1982 Z1100 Sprectre top to bottom some years ago and she runs as new - now I hve a weird failue I suspect is parts related but hut the manual is so limited in the subject I hope fellow members can help me.
Wridign on Saturday - all normal.
Then I accidentally flicked on the harzard light switch - end result all lights start flashing s they should.
1. I pull in - switch off the harzard light switch and then notice left hand turn lights are working.
2. RH turn signals are not working
3. Horn is not working
4. Low beam is not working
5 High mean is working.
Then after a short while left hand turn signals stop working too.
6. Brake lights also not responding to front brake handle or rear brake foot pedal.
Still high bean main light is working.
Sunday - no lights working including high beam - but today my Monday (Australia) the high beam is working again fine.
I have read in the forum posts from years ago there is one central round relay that controls all the light plus the round flasher relay.
There is nothing in the manual on this subject.
Is is correct that there is one relay that controls all the lights (although I don't understand what the high beam works fine?)
WHat should I order/check to know why the instant failure by accidentally using the emercency warning switch (which seems to have triggered a part failure) , and where is this central round relay - if that is true please ? Thank you

Try to dis-connect all involved plugs, check for loose spade connectors in the housing.
Good ground and 12 Volt + terminals to frame, engine, fuse block, relays and wiring loom.
Ignition key look switch switch contacts could be burned or de-solder to the connector due to heat.
A lot of copper wire gremlins can make your day worse and difficult to find the little trouble maker......

I would suggest looking at a wiring diagram, mark all the effected consumers and then work back looking for a common denominator (shared ground, common multi-pin connector etc) as pretty much everything effected seems to stem from the left handlebar

Just a quick test
Grab your voltmeter
Meter on DC V
Key switch set to ON
Kill switch set to RUN
Engine not running
Black probe on negative battery post(post is the metal part of the battery)
Red probe on positive battery post
Note voltage
Move red probe to each side of each fuse
You will have 2 readings per fuse
Note voltage and wire color.
Move red probe to any bare metal spot on engine case.
Note voltage
Reading should be as close to 0.0V as possible (and it must be steady)
Turn off bike
Check the wiring connector in the blue circle.
It may have come loose or the wires got pinched.
Follow the wires to the left handlebar switch to see if they have been cut.
The connector may be in the headlight bucket.

This is a very detailed subject it seems. I'll doo as much testing as possible - but what is the - Louis Dudzik's GM HEI ignitor ?? Where does it sit on the bike?
Thanks

You say there should be 2 readings when using metre to test each side of fuses - what are these 2 different readings approx thanks?
Thanks

Lou designed an igniter based on some GM HEI components that could replace a faulty factory igniter. You would have to build and install it yourself, so you would already know where it is. Why do you ask about it?This is a very detailed subject it seems. I'll doo as much testing as possible - but what is the - Louis Dudzik's GM HEI ignitor ?? Where does it sit on the bike?
