Need Help please! compatability was created by BiggDogg
Hello, New to the forums. I would like to know if the points and coil packs are innerchangeable from a 1981 kz650 to a 1978kz650 the 79 is mine and I have a chance to buy the 81 for a C-note. It is a complete bike eccept no seat!

I think the 81's had electronic ignition, not points. Either way the answer is yes. Matter of fact, I put electronic ignition from a newer 550 and 750 on my 78 points engine.

It's worth more than $100 for parts, & you might be able to find a seat for cheap on eBay. I don't know about the coils, though. I do know that on the little twins, they switched from points to electronic ignition in 1980, so you're in the grey area with those bikes. Hopefully, one of the 650 guys will jump in & tell you. (Or you could look up the part numbers on the Kawasaki site.)
Cheers,

Thanks for the info will definately help! the guy said the motor is low mileage but has set without plugs for awhile in the weather, but I think a little deasle fuel will free them up enough to crank it over that is prolly worth $500 or better plus a couple hundred for the frame and tank and all the cables, tires, wheels, etc...I do appreciate the help and I will keep yall up to date on my progress,Thanks again!
